December 4, 1937 - March 26, 2022
Kathleen Fleming Bregante, born December 4, 1937, passed on March 26th at her home, surrounded by family after a short illness. She was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was the last and eldest surviving of 3 siblings (Carol Garroutte and Ted Fleming). She is survived by her children Christina Swift, Julianne Velasco, Anthony T. Bregante, Paul Bregante and her 10 grandchildren. She grew up in La Jolla and cherished her days at Stella Maris Academy and Our Lady of Peace High School. There she competed in basketball and swimming and met lifelong friends. In her teen years she fell in love with horses and competed in western horsemanship. Upon graduation she felt a “calling” to her faith and joined the convent at Mount Saint Mary’s University in Santa Monica, California. As a Sister of Saint Joseph of Carondelet, she majored in History and became an Elementary school English teacher. Shortly thereafter, she left the convent and met the love of her life, Anthony C. Bregante. Together they built their dream home and raised four children where she remained a committed mother and grandmother. “Gaga”, named by her grandchildren, always lived her life to the fullest. NFL Draft day, Fantasy Football and the Del Mar races were some of her favorite events. She showed encouragement and support to all her grandkids at their baseball and basketball games, CYT plays, Irish dance and Taekwondo competitions and surfing. Kathy took pride in her charity work with the Juniors of Social Service Auxillary and National Charity League and the VA hospital. She enjoyed multiple church communities; Our Mother of Confidence, All Hallows, and Mary Star of the Sea. She loved singing in the choir, cooking dinners for the priests, and creating flower arrangements. Her friendly and fun personality was magnetic and appreciated by many. Her never ending love for her faith and family will never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, her family would like donations to be made in the name of Kathy Bregante to Mary Star of the Sea Church.
