The holiday season is a warm and nostalgic time for many people. But for those grieving a loss, the holidays can be especially difficult. Gathering for all the usual events can feel overwhelming, and memories of the loved one who has died can intensify sadness.
If you’re grieving, it’s important to take care of yourself during the holidays.
- Care for yourself physically. Make sure you’re maintaining a healthy diet and exercise, even if you don’t feel like eating or moving. It’s also important to keep a sensible sleep schedule to protect your health.
- Celebrate in your own way. Don’t be afraid to cancel or delegate events, but don’t ignore the season, either. Decide which gatherings and traditions are most important to you, and let things go that you feel will be too painful. Don’t be afraid to tell people “no” if you don’t think that attending an event is in your best interest. On the other hand, make sure you’re accepting help when it’s offered, and don’t isolate yourself socially.
- Be truthful with friends and family about your feelings. It’s understandable that you might feel low during the holiday season, and people who love you will want to know what’s going on. Ask for space if you need it, but let them know if you need help with something, too.
- Make time and space in the season to honor your loved one’s memory in a way that’s meaningful to you. This might be as simple as setting aside some time to look through old photographs or to make a small memorial display at home of photos and mementos. You could have a notebook for people to sign or write down a memory when they visit. You might also find meaning in volunteering, making a donation in your loved one’s memory or attending a candlelight memorial service. The important thing is for you to find something that helps you begin to heal.
