I met Darby during my exchange year. My hostdad, Kevin Reilly, knew him very well. I did not spend a lot of time with him but from the conversation we had I could tell that he was an adventurous and passionate sailor who loved life. He was so kind to offer me a place in a surfing class although it had already been too late to join. Every now and then he would drive to the beach and come watch. After class we would have a good laugh together about my horrible surfing skills. Mein Beileid.
I met Darby in the early 70’s when I played with Sabor. He was a very close friend with our bass player, Chis Aquilera. I was so happy to see him at our Sabor reunion concert 6 years ago at Chicano Park. I loved that guy. He’s was an amazing person.
Dear Darby, We were kids together sixty years ago, and how good it was, with Jeff and Kathy and Nancy and my sister Sue. Whether at La Jolla Cove, bodysurfing at Boomer, Camping in Baja it was always such an adventure. Remember when your Dad took all of us out to the kelp beds off Boomer? The Abalone dinners, Judy and Don dancing to Herb Alpert, the Underwater film festivals, Vern Fleet making Ciopino at the Shores.
Fast forward to Molokai and your visits to the East End in the seventies, and after the passing of another two decades, reconnecting in Poway. One thing never changed, your incredible laugh and sense of humor. You were so easy going and flexible, I nicknamed you Gumby. Your love for your family was paramount, and my heart goes out to them.
You were a waterman, a sailor, a diver. Wishing you warm seas and a fair wind, Gumby.

I have known Darby for many years but over the past year, having worked side by side, I began to look up to him almost as a son looks up to his father. Despite my pesky questions and many mistakes he always had the patience to guide me. I believe this to be a reflection of his generous nature. Dear Darby, thank you for your friendship over the past 12 years, thank you for teaching me how to repair sail boats, how to weld, and surprising me with McDonalds when I worked at the aquatic center. I’m going to miss your stories about serving in the U.S. military, rants about politics and most of all your advice on how to support and provide for our families. The beach will be different without greeting you with our shaka Braddah handshake in the morning. RIP Darby #shakabraddah 🤙🏾

I first met Darby, a neighbor, less than a year ago. Our friendship was immediate, we shared lots of similar interests. Darby loved his family, his work, and his Country.
Dardy sailed off into the sunset far too soon, he will be missed.
