Albert James Galloway's Obituary
Albert James “Jim” Galloway Jr., 91, passed away peacefully on April 9th, 2018, at his home in Mt. Helix. He was born July 26th, 1926, in San Diego to Albert James Galloway Sr. and Delphia Marie Trittipo. In High School during World War II, Jim began working as a soda jerk at the family business, Galloway’s Pharmacy, in Barrio Logan. He served in the army from 1945–1946. After returning from the war, Jim received a bachelor’s degree from USC in 1952 and his pharmacist’s license in 1953. In 1958, upon the death of his father, Jim took over the struggling family business and by the early 1970’s had built it into the largest independent pharmacy in California. After his retirement in the mid-1990’s, Jim served for over a decade on the Healthy San Diego Task Force as an ombudsman for the poor and working class in the San Diego healthcare system. He was married for 25 years to his first wife Alice “Joy” Galloway, and then for 42 years to his beloved second wife, Nina Jean (Hull) Galloway, who passed away shortly before him on December 3rd, 2017.Jim leaves behind his sons Frederick and Phillip Galloway, Stepdaughter Michelle Erwin Pinnix, and Stepson Mitchell Erwin, Grandchildren Jasmin Galloway, James Galloway, Rooney James, Nicole Anderson Elbik, Danielle Anderson, Carissa Pinnix, Zackary Pinnix, Garrett Erwin, Tyler Erwin, and three great-grandchildren Dylan Anderson, Aiden Erwin, and Jordan Erwin.Jim is remembered as a brilliant thinker with an engaging and nimble mind. He was also known as an expert joke and story-teller with an exceptional sense of humor, and a tenacious competitor who continued to play handball twice a week up until a few months before his passing. In fact, one of his proudest handball memories was serving 21 straight points at age 89 in a doubles match featuring nationally ranked players. Most importantly, however, was the fact that he always treated people with kindness, respect and dignity, and in the 1960s was a quiet leader in the ongoing struggle for civil rights. Those who knew and loved him will miss him dearly.A private memorial will be held in May. Condolences and remembrances may be left in the Guest Book on this page.
