Alexander Nesterenko's Obituary
Alexander Nesterenko, 96, of El Cajon, California, passed away peacefully in his home on July 30, 2024.
He was born in Poltava, Ukraine on November 25, 1927. After leaving Ukraine during WWII and spending several years in Germany as a refugee, he immigrated to the United States in 1949. Alexander met Sofia in Rochester, New York where they married in 1959 and started a family. They moved to San Diego, California in 1963 where they settled down to raise their children. At home, they enjoyed their time together gardening, taking getaways to the mountains for picnics and hikes, going on winter ski trips, and traveling abroad.
As an engineer, Alexander worked for the U.S. Navy and in the private sector on projects ranging from fighter jets and submarines to nuclear reactors.
Alexander will be remembered by his family and friends as a very kind, caring and hard-working husband and father with a devotion to his family that cannot be expressed in words. He was very active in the local Ukrainian community for over 40 years as he was deeply proud of his Ukrainian heritage.
He is survived by his wife, Sofia, his children Peter, Alex and Lida, and his grandchildren Matthew and Brandon. He was preceded in death by his sisters Maria Svirsky and Nadia Omelchenko and his parents Anna and Dmytro Nesterenko.
The funeral will be held at the St. Mary Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Church at 9558 Campo Road, Spring Valley, CA 91977 on Monday, August 12 at 10:00 am. All friends and family are welcome. The family asks that donations to St. Mary Protectress Orthodox Church Flood Relief Fund be made instead of flowers or other gifts.
