Alice Hill Bellevan's Obituary
Alice Calla Bellevan passed from this world to her heavenly home on October 24, 2015, two days before her 98th birthday. Alice was born on October 26, 1917 in Riceville, Iowa to Fern (Elwell) and Herbert Ure. Alice spent her youth in Iowa and Minnesota living in small towns and on a farm. She attended schools in town as well as country schools where her mother taught Alice in the 5th grade. Destiny called when at the age of 20, Alice left Iowa State Teacher’s College to marry Montell Hill. They eventually had six children together. Leaving the cold climate of Iowa, Alice and family moved to sunny San Diego in 1959 traveling cross country for three days on the Southern Pacific train. Here she was closer to her family which included her mother, brother Sam, and twin sisters Bessie and Jessie. Alice, now a single mother, worked to support her family still at home by being a clerk at the North Park Thrifty Drug Store for thirteen years. It was during this time that Alice met Paul Bellevan, the manager of the local TG&Y Store. Paul used to sing the old song “I Found a Million Dollar Baby at the Five & Ten Cent Store” referring to the lovely Alice. They were married in 1971 and spent the next forty-four years together. Alice loved to dance. She was a great cook and baker. She always had a warm welcome for family and friends in her home and loved to entertain. Called “Mama Alice” by some of her children’s friends she was something of a surrogate mother to many. Over the years Alice was a member and held office in many local organizations as well as serving as a volunteer in the gift shop for UCSD Medical Center. She was a member of the San Carlos Methodist Church; the Order of the Eastern Star, Harbor Lights chapter; (grand)Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War; UFCW Retirees Club; Zoological Society of San Diego; Good Sam RV club and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Paul; her sons Terry and Ty and her granddaughter Deanna. She is survived by her son, Tom (Shirley) Hill; daughters Virginia Hill, Beverly Ashe and Iris (Sammy) Carini; step-daughters Pamela (Pete) Selvig and Penny Childers; sister Jessie Flegal; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Alice was dearly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation be made in Alice’s name to the Gideon International organization (www.gideons.org).
