Angelita Ruiz Martinez's Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Angelita Ruiz Martinez, Chula Vista, CA., on Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 10:00 am. She was 83 years of age.Lita, as she was called by all was born April 9, 1935 in Bogo, Cebu, Philippines. She survived the Japanese occupation of 1941-1945 and went on to college, obtaining her doctorate degree in dentistry (DMD) at the age of 23 from Centro Escolar University, Manila in 1959.She met her future husband, Roland Nino Martinez in Manila, in November 1958 and subsequently came to New York City with a Fellowship Resident Scholarship with the Guggenheim Dental Clinic under the Foreign Exchange Program. She went on to become a graduate in Anesthesia, St. Agnes Hospital, Philadelphia, Pa. She also worked as a pulmonary technician at Charity Hospital, New Orleans and Battan Memorial Hospital, Albuquerque, NM. She later worked at University Hospital, San Diego, CA.She married Roland Nino in May 1961 in Baltimore, MD. and subsequently having completed her foreign exchange tenure accompanied her Naval career husband to the Philippines for three years of duty in October 1962.Their two sons, Paul C. and Mark S. were born at Naval Station Sangley Point, in April 1963 and May 1964. After duty in Albuquerque, N.M., New Orleans, La. the family moved to San Diego in January 1970 where they all remained to this day.Angelita was instrumental and associated in beginning the Respiratory Therapy Program in 1971 to 1991 and sent 20 classes through Grossmont College. During this period she took sabbatical and completed postgraduate studies at UCLA in dentistry. She then took the dental boards and qualified on her first attempt. In 1983 she opened her own dental clinic in National City. During this time she encouraged four of her dental assistants to complete their schooling for their dental licenses. They all completed their studies and became licensed dentists in Southern California.survivors include the family, sister Mrs. Inez R. Martinez, her husband and brother to Roland, Lyle Edward, nephew Thomas, daughter Lisa and son-in-law Vince Archibeque of Boise, Idaho. Dr. Martinezs parents died in 1967 and 1991. The parents of Roland died in Oklahoma in 1955 and 2007. A sister to Angelita, Cris Mangar and her husband Dr. Harold Mangar reside in Hillsbourough, California. They have three sons David, Steven and Jeff. Interment is scheduled at Greenwood Memorial, San Diego, in midweek.
