Artile Stance's Obituary
Artile Stance, age 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at his home,
surrounded by his loving wife and family. Art was born to the late Pink and Bennie Mae
Stance, on July 23, 1934, in Greenwood, Louisiana. He was preceded by his brother Leonard
Stance and sister, Pinkie Lee.
At the age of two, his family moved to Avinger, Texas. Artile, known to many as “Art,”
finished high school at Victory High in Avinger, Texas. He soon found the love of his life,
Flora M. McVea, who was from Terrell, Texas. They married in 1958 and later moved to San
Diego, California. Art joined Rohr Industries in 1963 and tirelessly and faithfully supported
his family by working for 31 years. In 1981, Art received Christ as his personal savior under
the loving leadership of Bishop and Jean McKinney. Art became a deacon at St. Stephen’s
Church of God in Christ, where he and his wife Flora faithfully served for 20 plus years.
Later, he joined Higher Living Christian Ministries, as head deacon. Art drove a big blue bus,
often filled with children. He became the “grandfather,” for so many children.
As a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather he was a strong
patriarch, who was a blessing in countless ways to family, friends, and the church
community. Art and Flora believed in the power of entrepreneurship, which birthed
Bowlegged Barbecue. Through their inspiration and encouragement, Bowlegged Barbeque
will carry-on the family legacy and rich traditions in honor of their dear parents.
Furthermore, Art’s positive impact and legacy of love and faith in God will forever be
engrained in the hearts of his family and dear friends, who will deeply miss him.
Those left to honor Art’s memory and legacy include his beloved wife, Flora Stance of 65
years, his sons, Carlos Stance(Char) , Kenneth Stance (Kymberlee) and daughter, Maria
Jeanette (Donald) Reese; and godson Ken Hawkins, seven grandchildren, Jessica Reese,
Deonna Reese, Olivia Reese, Jordan Stance, Jadah Stance, Kyndall Stance and Kennedy
Stance; three great-grandchildren, Malachi Johnson, McKenzie Eldridge and Justus Stance,
his dear nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other loving family members and friends.
Art also leaves to cherish many memories with his sister-n-laws Doris Underwood and
Catherine Jones and brother-n-law Herb (”Tree”) Travenio.
