Arvis Ann McGhee's Obituary
Arvis Ann McGhee was born in Camden, Arkansas on December 29, 1940. She was the first child of Zin O. McRae and Flora Dean McRae, and affectionately called by her middle name, Ann. Arvis attended Lincoln High School in Camden, Arkansas and upon graduation, entered AM&N College in Pine Bluff, Arkansas where she graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Education. Following college, Arvis taught elementary school and continued her career in education as a substitute teacher and school clerk. She retired from the San Diego Unified School District following over 50 years in the educational system.
Arvis’ favorite bible scripture was the 23rd Psalm. She was a dedicated member of Bayview Baptist Church, where she served as a bible school teacher and a member of the food distribution ministry. She was also active in the women’s ministry, Studies in Christian Living bible study, and the Silver Strands ministry.
Arvis enjoyed participating in “The Pokeno Social Club,” a sisterhood of women who supported each other and their families. Arvis loved to laugh, spend time with her family and dear friends, shopping, playing games like Yahtzee and Scrabble, and cuddling with her granddog, Nala.
Arvis was preceded in death by her husband Ridgely L. McGhee, son Darius J. McGhee, father Zin O. McRae, mother Flora D. McRae, and brother Zin O. McRae, Jr.
Arvis had a fierce love for her family. She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter Leslie R. Cunningham (Dwayne); daughter Brenda D. McGhee; daughter-in law Roshauna McGhee, grandson Jaylen V. Cunningham, great-grand children: Qi’Irie McKines, Mikel McKines, Damoni Weaver, and Dyani Weaver; two sisters: Zinnette McRae Lamb of Bethesda, MD; Floretta Babbs (Junious) of Little Rock, AR; three sisters-in-law: Marva Cooper of Camden, AR; Rose Ivory of Little Rock, AR; and Annette Lewis (Roscoe) of Dallas, TX; one brother-in-law: Louis McGhee (Ollie) of Alexandria, LA; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, and a multitude of great friends.
