Augustus "Gus" Owens' Obituary
Augustus Willis Owens was born August 31, 1928 in Bogalusa, Louisiana to John L. Owens of Bogalusa, Louisiana and Maggie Owens of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Gus grew up in Louisiana attending schools there and went on to serve his country in the United States Army. Gus retired from the military and completed his college degree at San Diego State University. Gus worked as a social worker in Childrens’ Protective Services for the County of San Diego for another 10 years. After retiring from Social Services, he stayed busy spending time with his family and repairing appliances for members of the community. He was also a member of the Macedonia Lodge at one time.Gus and his siblings were “PK’s” (Preachers Kids), as their father was a Methodist minister demonstrating first hand what a commitment to Jesus Christ means. Gus learned that commitment well and served as Elder, Deacon, Mens’ Club member, and Sunday school teacher for nearly 49 years at Southeast Presbyterian church in San Diego, CA. All who knew Gus were aware that he had a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ.Gus is survived by his wife, Elsie, of 57 years. Gus is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Wanda, son-in-law Vernon and grandchildren: Desaree, Natoyah, Joshua; goddaughter-Melba, and close friend Desaree Bland. Gus is also survived by three great grandchildren, and many nephews, nieces and other relatives.“Daddy Gus” was God’s faithful servant. May God use his life and death to speak “His” truth.
