Barbara R. Luce's Obituary
Barbara Jean Remy Luce, 93, passed away early Friday morning on October 20th. She was a beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother.Barbara was born on April 5, 1925 in Pasadena, California to Ruth and Thomas Remy. She grew up in Pasadena and attended Pasadena City College and then Stanford University. At Stanford she met and married Edgar Arthur Luce Jr. They were a loving couple for 60 years until Ed’s death in 2006.Barbara taught kindergarten in Palo Alto while Ed finished law school, after which the couple moved to San Diego. Barbara was active in the San Diego community for three decades. Her activities included the Wednesday Club, the San Diego Board of Library Commissions, the library boards of Stanford, SDSU, and UCSD, and the Junior League of San Diego. In addition to raising her four children, she was an avid tennis player, golfer, and Stanford sports fan. Her love of history and books inspired her to research and collect first editions with a focus on women travelers and explorers. Barbara was also an excellent cook, and enjoyed dining with friends and family, as well as traveling, attending movies, playing games, reading, and attending sporting events with husband Ed.In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Ed and her sister Shirley Remy Supple. She is survived by her brother Richard Remy, her children Constance Luce Jubb, Edgar A. Luce III, Jennifer Susan Luce, and Deborah Jean Luce; her grandchildren, Lucas Anthony Jubb, Sonya Mariana Jubb, Edgar Adam Luce, Thomas Cameron Luce, Harrison Reede Luce, Alexandra Luce Howard, and Adam Stark Howard; and her great- grandchildren, Nayezca Guzman-Jubb, Adayah Elizabeth Jubb-Miller, and Yaelah Constance Jubb-Miller.Barbara played an active part in all aspects of her family, spanning four generations, and she will be remembered for her wit, her charm, her grace, her wonderful sense of humor, her kindness, her thoughtfulness, and her genuine concern for people.Those who wish to remember Barbara in a special way are invited to make memorial gifts to the Stanford or UCSD Library Funds.
