I love you Dad, my hero. When you met Mom you told her you had given your life to serve our Country first and she would be second, she accepted. Together you served, protected, sacrificed and loved America for the rest of your life. The pictures you would mail home to us of you and your fellow boilers techs while were over seas showed the burn marks on your shoulders, arms, sweating and so oily from the boilers in the engine room of the USS Kitty Hawk. I remember when I was 8 years old during our Independent Cruise to Bremeton Washington I asked if I could go with you to the engine room, you said yes. You carried me into the boiler room on your back, walking through the boiler room, it was kinda of dark, the boilers were so loud and it was hot. No day light, no fresh air and as you were talking to the boiler Techs they stood strong and proud. Truly a sacrifice of self. I always believed as a child that you were brave, my heart and mind felt this so strongly, even you though you were over seas, I didn’t see you but I knew this to be true. In Murphy Canyon Navy housing, as teenagers, you turned the garage into a recreation room for us, pool table, bumper pool table, stereo system you permitted us and our friends to paint the garage walls with characters of our choices. Then one day as an adult you and I talked about the recreation room. I said thank you Dad for our recreation room in Murphy Canyon, you looked at me and said, “you think I did it for you, I didn’t the room was created, to keep you and other kids, teenagers who wanted to have fun/safe place to go to off the streets while their Dads were over seas, to help keep all of us out of harm and trouble, even though you never met their Dads you kept watch.Every time you came home from over seas, from a 6 – 10 1/2 month west pack. Edward, Margaret and myself were changed we were growing up while you were away, I remember after a 101/2 month west pack you held Edward in your arms and told him look how much you grown. And when you and Mom kissed it sure was a long one…..When you retired it all began the decades of families coming together you brought all of the families and friends together for a good time, supported the orphans, fed the homeless, protected strangers that you didn’t know from bullies, saved the VA Medical Center in La Jolla 25 million dollars, loved having a good time. When David wanted you to sing Karaoke you refused so many times and then finally you decided to try you loved it and you continued to sing. Your grandsons/family promise at Halloween to decorate, put out the red carpet and the mirror so when the children, walk up to house and see themselves, dance jump up and down and yell Trick or Treat. . thank you for the wonderful memories.Soon you and Mom will be laid to rest together. I will continue to do as you have requested of me honorably. Heavenly Father, I thank you for creating my DAD, an extraordinary man.To my DAD, my HERO… I love you so very much…. Edna
