Mrs Betty Jean Davies' Obituary
Betty Jean Davies was born in Nebraska on January 28, 1929. At age 86 she peacefully passed away on September 20, 2015 after a long illness. Betty is survived by four children and their spouses, Diane Dunaway (Donald Dunaway), Sun City, CA, Jon Davies (Laurie Davies), Lakeside, CA, Jeffrey Davies (Diane Davies) and Dana Kaland (Gary Kaland), both of El Cajon, CA, 12 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Betty spent her childhood and early adult life on her parent’s farm in Kansas until she ventured out into the world. When she was young she preferred to spend time outside on the farm with her father working the fields and tending to the horses. Betty met Jim Davies and married him on August 5, 1951. She became an expert mover those early years of marriage since they lived many places beginning in Kansas, moving to Missouri, then Illinois, back to Kansas, and finally settling in El Cajon, California in 1961. Her sisters, Winona Schoonover and Iona Taft had moved to San Diego prior to Jim and Betty. Her parents, Amanda and Herman Spellman quickly followed their children’s families. Spending family time together and making memories was always her priority. When the family was young, many holidays were spent together with her parents and sister’s families, camping and fishing trips were taken and the habit of attending church was established. As the family grew she started the tradition of the yearly Christmas cookie bake. These traditions continue and have been handed down to her children and her grandchildren. Betty Jean Davies worked at Kaiser Permanente in Member Services where she retired after 15 years in 1986. She was an active member at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, La Mesa, California for over 50 years. Betty loved her fellowship there and the many friendships that she formed. She and her husband Jim enjoyed playing bridge and did so for many years. After Jim’s death she played with a group of friends on a regular basis. Betty loved to garden and was especially proud of her landscaping in her backyard in Fletcher Hills, California. Betty was preceded in death by her loving husband Jim, her two sisters Iona Taft and Winona Schoonover and a son Michael who died in infancy.A Celebration of Life will be held at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, La Mesa, CA at 3:00 PM on Friday September 25, 2015.In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to The Alzheimer’s Association .
