Beulah E. Daniels' Obituary
On October 17, 2017, at 11:21 a.m. PST, Beulah Eugennie Hylton Daniels of Otay Ranch, Chula Vista, California, found a new home in heaven. It is believed that the aneurysm that ended her life did not also inflict her with pain. Beulah was born to Sedonia and Violet May Hylton in Seaford Town, Catadupa, St. James province, Jamaica, on September 15, 1931, in the era of British rule over the country, 30 years before it obtained independence in 1962. Beulah studied at Catadupa Government School became a student teacher. Her dream of becoming a teacher was upended when she responded to the British call for nurses, and in an effort to support her family of 8 younger siblings, she moved to London, England, where she trained and worked as a State Registered Nurse in the East End at Hackney Hospital for several years. At the suggestion of her close friend Jeanne Stapleton, she boarded the Empress of England and embarked on the 7 day ocean journey to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, eventually settling in Toronto, Canada, working in a large general hospital, and becoming a Canadian citizen. Her dedication to her nursing career–and a lack of tolerance for the cold Canadian winters– ultimately led her to emigrate to the US, to Ventura, California and it’s sunny weather, where she met and married the young naval midshipman Jesse O. Daniels in 1970. The marriage led her to join Jesse at his duty station on the island of Adak, Alaska, for three years, where her first child Lisa was born; his next stop, San Diego, California, saw the birth of sister Karen Ann, and her decision to change her career to that of full time parent.Beulah’s sweet, gentle nature, pride in hospitality, avid reading and study were complemented by her joy of music and musicals, curating glorious rose gardens, and delight at the lights of the city at night and spectacular shows of fireworks. She was a dedicated mother who nurtured and groomed her children for academic success, fighting when necessary and working part-time as a nurse and Elementary School teacher’s aide such that each child could obtain an equal opportunity at an excellent education.Faith in God was a pillar of Beulah’s life she knew the love of Jesus Christ, her Savior and believed in his power and love for all people. Beulah’s spiritual journey began when she was a small girl in Jamaica. Along the way she was shepherded through her 19 year membership and engagement in Midway Baptist Church; in her later years she happily attended Bay View Baptist Church of southeastern San Diego, and most recently she found great joy attending services here at Eastlake Community Church, Eastlake, Chula Vista.Beulah is survived by her dedicated and loving husband, Jesse Owens Daniels, her daughters Lisa Eugennie Daniels and Karen Ann Daniels, her son-in-law, Mark David Condon Jr., and her grandchildren Achilles Owens Daniels-Condon and Anaïs Daniels-Condon. Also mourning her loss are her beloved sisters Mrs. Joyce Islyn Chen (Pembroke Pines, FL), Ms. Violet Eukalee Hilton (Fort Lauderdale, FL), Mrs. Alice Ophelia Royale, Mrs. Valerie P. Henry (Hollywood, FL) Mrs. Patricia L. Brijmohan (Jacksonville, FL), and brother Stanhope Hylton (Jacksonville, FL) along with her many nieces and nephews. Finally, joining them in their grief and celebrating Beulah’s life and love are sister-in-law Annie Mae Singleton (New Bern, NC) and Brother-in-law Frederick L. Daniels (Atlanta, GA).
