Beverly Ann Asbill-Gumbs' Obituary
Beverly Ann Asbill-Gumbs was born and raised in San Diego, CA on December 22,
1964. She is the third born of five children to Pastora Asbill from Panama City, Panama
and Edward T. Asbill from Colombia, South Carolina. Her siblings are Mateo Logan,
Monica Asbill, Edward D. Asbill and Amaris Asbill. As the middle child she faced many
challenges, but among those experiences she cherished the bonds she created over
the years with her family. She has two identical twin daughters, Alissa Gumbs-Fells and
Briana Gumbs. Her son-in-law is Amir Fells and grandson is Koa Fells. In addition, she
also has another son Jusin Bell partnered to Briana Gumbs and a baby girl coming May
2025.
Her educational background includes attending Freeze Elementary, Bell Middle School,
and Morse High School. She went to college at San Diego City College, San Diego
State University (SDSU) and University of Phoenix. She received her B.S. degree in
Business at University of Phoenix.
Beverly has worked in the fast food industry, the medical field and lastly in business. To
pay for college, she worked at Kentucky Fried Chicken while attending both City College
and SDSU at the same time. She worked in a clinical laboratory and was a pharmacy
technician for many years leading up to working for the city of San Diego for 21 years as
a Senior Procurement Specialist Supervisor. One thing she was most proud of working
for the city of San Diego was collaborating with other departments and being their go to
person. She will never forget the praises she received when working for Fleet in Chollas
Park.
Her hobbies over the years have always been related to sports and the arts. During her
school years she played softball, sketched and played in her school band, jazz band
and marching band. She has played the piano, clarinet and bass clarinet since she was
in 3rd grade, and from middle school to her college years she was first chair for the
clarinet. While at SDSU, she played in the college orchestra and marching band. One of
her greatest experiences was playing for the Super Bowl in 1988. She also loved going
out with friends for nightlife and going to concerts since the 80’s.
Beverly has also explored the world. Internationally she has visited the Netherlands,
Paris, St. Kitts & Nevis, and Mexico. While in the states she has gone to Delaware, New
York, Hawaii, Minnesota, Tennessee, Maryland, Nevada, and Ohio. The most
memorable trips she experienced were going to The Netherlands to visit her friend with
a side trip of a weekend in Paris. Another memorable trip was surprising her daughters
touring three amusement parks for their college spring break.
During her retirement, she prioritized self care and spending time with her family. She
biked with Black Girls Do Bike (San Diego Chapter) and cycled with her brother Mateo.
She continued to go to concerts with her friends and family, the last concert she
attended was TLC summer 2024. Beverly also found the time to learn how to play the
guitar and piano. And most importantly spent all her time as a granny nanny for her
grandson Koa.
Beverly was diagnosed with Glioblastoma (GBM) a Grade 4 Tumor, also known as Brain
Cancer, on September 24, 2023. The tumors also caused seizures and a right
hemorrhagic stroke. She encountered numerous treatments including surgery, radiation
therapy, chemotherapy, an Optune device, infusion therapy, and rehabilitation therapy.
Her daughter Briana was her caregiver full-time, with the help of Briana’s partner Justin
and twin sister Alissa. Beverly was determined to recover and find out the latest
treatments. With her strength and resilience, she was able to be a part of family
milestones including celebrating her 60th birthday. Beverly passed away on January 26,
2025 peacefully surrounded by family. She leaves the legacy of two daughters who are
nurses and two grandchildren, Koa and the newest bundle of joy coming May 2025.
