Carlton James Evans' Obituary
It is with profound sorrow that we share the passing of Carlton "CJ" Evans who left us on June 23, 2024, passing peacefully at his home surrounded by his wife, Tina Evans, his son Jarrell Evans, and daughter-in-law Lela Kiss-Evans. He is also survived by his eldest son Russell Evans, daughter-in-law Kristin Evans, brother Craig Evans, previous wives, Shari and Pat. Carlton also leaves behind two amazing grandchildren, Aeneus and Torin, who brought him incredible joy throughout the years. In addition to his immediate family, Carlton was also a loving stepfather to Tina’s children, Mack, Sam and Kristina Williams, as well as Pat’s children, Josette, Juanita, Jamika, James and Andre.
Born in Philadelphia, PA, on September 3, 1958, CJ was an avid sports fan, but most importantly he followed all of the Philadelphia professional sports teams. More than anything else, his favorite player to watch was his grandson, Torin “TD” Evans, who plays quarterback and had led his high school team to the championships this past year. Carlton’s other pride and joy was his eldest grandson, Aeneus who graduated with from the University of Pittsburg with a BS in Chemical Engineering. Both Aeneus and Torin were able to visit San Diego last year for some much-needed quality time.
A friend to everyone he encountered, Carlton always put the needs of others above his own. His aura of kindness was infectious, and he had a unique ability to make everyone feel valued, from the renowned surgeon to the humble janitor. Strong-minded and determined, he also upheld a sense of privacy which was a cherished part of his personality.
Growing up in West Philadelphia, Carlton came from a loving home on Irving Street, raised by his parents James R. Evans and Clarice E. Evans, Carlton took considerable pride in being in the 234th class of Central High School in Philadelphia, where he ran track specializing in the triple jump event. He was one of the first Black students in Central history to excel in the event. He then went on to attend Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he received his BS degree. His graduation from IUP stood as a testament to his persistent dedication and focus. After graduation, Carlton began his career in the insurance industry, starting in Claims and eventually becoming an agent with State Farm, which provided him with the opportunity to move his mother to San Diego where she enjoyed her remaining years, close to both of her sons.
Carlton got back into Claims, working with Gas Lamp Insurance, until he passed in June.
Since meeting Tina, Carlton cherished their many travel adventures, animal encounters, concerts and sporting events, but above all he valued the simple, peaceful moments in their life together. His selfless acts of kindness were a lesson to us all about blessing those less fortunate than ourselves. His legacy is of a resilient mind, body, and spirit, who was a beacon of kindness, and his thoughtfulness touched the lives of many. He believed in not holding grudges and emphasized the need for empathy and understanding. His strong spirit and unwavering kindness will be missed by those who had the fortune of knowing him.
