Carter Wayne YarboroughJuly 12, 1969 – June 24, 2018Carter, 48, of Spring Valley passed away Sunday, June 24, 2018 from a motorcycle accident.Carter was born in Houston, TX to James and Wanda Yarborough. The family moved to California in 1976, where Carter attended Monte Vista High School, graduating in 1987. He ran Track and Cross Country for Monte Vista High School and earned an athletic scholarship to Cal State L.A. Carter had a highly successful college career, winning NCAA titles in the 10K and graduating with a degree in Sports Medicine. In 1996 Carter joined the United States Army, where he served his country until 1999.For the past twenty years, Carter worked at Sycuan Casino, where he was loved by everyone he encountered. He also coached Cross Country and Track at Valhalla High School for two decades, where he was lovingly known as “Coach Carter.” He was a unique coach; he ran alongside his athletes during every practice, motivated them in a calm way, and cared deeply about each and every one of them. Under his guidance, many of the athletes continued their athletic endeavors into and throughout their college careers. He will be remembered as a father figure to numerous runners.With Carter leading the way, the Norsemen achieved one of the most successful winning records in the history of Valhalla High School, with a combined 10+ League championship wins and 2 back-to-back CIF championship wins.He will be remembered as a compassionate, kind and easygoing man with a love for family and community. He is survived by his mother Wanda Yarborough-Puckett, stepfather Charles Puckett, sister Twyla, brother-in-law Hansa and nephew Marley La Fond. He is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, extended family and friends. Carter is preceded in death by his father, James Yarborough. He left behind a legacy of loyalty, perseverance, and strength.
