Charles Richard Willard's Obituary
Faithful Servant and Jazz Pianist
Charles Richard "Charlie" Willard
December 19, 1963 – July 1, 2026
Charles Richard "Charlie" Willard lived each day as a faithful servant, believing that worship was one of life's greatest privileges. A devoted follower of Christ, he found joy in drawing near to God through music, often sitting at a piano to offer thanks in song. On July 1, 2026, in El Cajon, California, Charlie entered into peaceful rest, trusting in the promise of eternal life through Jesus Christ.
Charlie was born on December 19, 1963, in Chula Vista, California, to Charles Joseph Willard and Wanda Rae Willard. From an early age, it was clear that God had blessed him with an extraordinary musical gift.
As a young boy, family Christmas shopping trips to Chula Vista's Broadway department store became memorable for an unexpected reason. During the holiday season, the store hired pianists to fill the aisles with Christmas music. Whenever the pianist stepped away for a break, Charlie, only nine or ten years old, would quietly walk over, sit down at the piano, and begin to play. Shoppers would stop in amazement as this young boy effortlessly filled the store with beautiful music, often drawing crowds who simply stood and listened.
His love for playing never faded. At Tony Roma's restaurant, where a piano greeted guests near the entrance, Charlie would do the very same thing. If the opportunity presented itself, he would sit down and play, not for recognition, but simply because music was part of who he was. His remarkable ability to hear a melody once and recreate it from memory left friends, family, and even strangers in awe.
Jazz became one of Charlie's greatest passions, especially the music of David Benoit, Michael McDonald, and Bobby Caldwell. Whether playing at home, in church, or among friends, Charlie believed every note was a gift from God and every song an opportunity to glorify Him. His music became an extension of his faith, bringing peace, encouragement, and joy to those fortunate enough to hear him play.
Away from the piano, Charlie quietly served others through honest work, most recently as a Restoration Specialist with Expertise Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning. He approached life with humility, gratitude, and a servant's heart. Even life's simplest moments, like sitting down with a grilled cheese sandwich after a long day, were received with thankfulness.
Above all else, Charlie loved his family. He treasured his daughter, Zoey Willard, and shared a lifelong bond with his brother, Kevin Willard. The values instilled by their parents remained a guiding influence throughout his life, and he carried their love with him wherever he went.
While Charlie's hands have now fallen silent on earth, we believe the music has not ended. The song he began here continues in the presence of the Lord, where praise never ceases. His melodies, his gentle spirit, and his unwavering faith will continue to echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
May the God of all comfort surround our family with His peace in the days ahead. Until we meet again, may Charlie rest peacefully in the loving arms of his Savior.
