Cheryl Anne Mattas' Obituary
Celebrating the Life of Cheryl Anne Mattas
Cheryl Anne Mattas, beloved wife, mother, Nana, Aunt, and friend to so many passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025, at home in Flinn Springs after a short illness. Cheryl grew up in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and later started a family in Flinn Springs, California where she remained until her death. She was born on November 26, 1950, to Alice Julie and Charles James Reddington in Pittsfield, MA, she attended local Catholic schools graduating from Saint Joseph’s Central High School in 1968. After graduating high school Cheryl attended Berkshire Community College shortly after she lived for a brief time in Japan. Cheryl then lived in Ventura, CA and attended Ventura Community College, receiving her RN license, moving onto California State University, to receive her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing. She moved to San Diego where she met her lifelong best friend Jeanne and her husband Greg Maiden. She also met her husband Edward Mattas, and married him on February 22, 1986, at their home in Flinn Springs, CA. In May of 1987 they welcomed their baby girl Julie Erin Mattas. Cheryl worked hard as a nurse in several hospitals in the San Diego area, and even attended San Diego State University to receive her Masters of Science in Nursing. Towards the end of her nursing career, Cheryl became a nursing instructor at Grossmont Community College. Cheryl retired in 2015 after 35+ years of helping people.
Cheryl was a diehard lifelong fan of all thing's baseball. Although she lived most of her life in California, she still cheered on the Boston Red Sox while being a die-hard Padres fan. She made several trips back home to the east coast to watch the Red Sox at Fenway Park, even being captured on the Jumbotron dancing and having the time of her life. Cheryl also loved supporting and cheering on her grandchildren at their sporting events. She loved to attend her granddaughter Mackenzie’s swim meets and be the loudest one on the swim deck, so she knew she was there to support her. Cheryl also was an avid cheerleader for David while he played little league and travel ball. When Nana Cheryl was in the stands she was cheering with all of her heart. If you ever had the pleasure to meet Cheryl, you knew how much she loved her grandchildren gushing about them any chance she got.
Cheryl leaves behind her husband, Edward, and their daughter Julie and her husband Matthew Loustalet. She also leaves behind two grandchildren Mackenzie Alice Ikeler, and David Loustalet. She was predeceased by her parents Alice and Charles Reddington, her sister Kathy Daniel’s just this past January, and her brother Charles “Bud” Reddington just a mere 20 hours before she passed.
Cheryl was a devout Catholic and avidly attended mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Lakeside, CA. She was regularly active in the church including Cursillo, being a Rectora of Cursillo #307, and at times the camp nurse for family camp at Whispering Winds. She was also an active
member of a small church group of women that would meet on zoom every Monday, along with her attending a small church group with her husband and friends every Wednesday night.
Cheryl loved to travel with her husband Ed in their motorhome, taking countless trips all over the US. She loved going float tube fishing on their yearly Eastern Sierras vacation. If there was a lake Cheryl was out on it enjoying herself even if she never caught one fish.
There will be a Mass held for Cheryl at her home church OLPH on Saturday July 12, 2025, with a Celebration of Life reception following at her home. The family requests privacy at this time. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Cheryl’s name to her church Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lakeside, CA. https://olphchurch.org/
