Dalisay Jocson Arevalo's Obituary
Dalisay Jocson Arevalo was born in Naic, Cavite, Philippines on March 12,1928. Her parents were Nicolas Jocson and Maria Arcena Jocson. Her siblings include her older sister, Delfina (deceased), and her 2 younger siblings, Lucita and Crispo (deceased).
Dalisay was married to Luis Caparas Arevalo for 49 years until his death in 1999. Together, they raised a family of 5 children, which later grew to 10 grandchildren. Dalisay is survived by her children and their spouses: Recy Arevalo, Lita and Nilo Villaluz, Louie and Jopin Arevalo, Bhabes and Resty Bancairen and Hermie and Colin Arevalo.
Her grandchildren are Nelson, Abigail, Michael, Dustin, Jonathan, Ryan, Kristina, Leah, Isabella, and Noah.
Dalisay Arevalo was orphaned at the age of 14 during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in 1942 during World War II. As a result, she and her siblings fell under the care of their close relatives. At the age of 15, she decided to take her sisters and brother back from her relatives and reunited her family. In her youth, she worked as a dressmaker and acted as the sole provider for the family. She then filled the role as “parent” to her siblings until they left home.
Dalisay dedicated her life to her husband and to raise their children the best she can. She emphasized the importance of higher education and pushed their children to pursue their goals. With her strong determination and resourcefulness, she managed to send them through college even with very limited resources. Dalisay then immigrated to the United States in 1986 to join her family and became an American citizen in 1991.
In the United States, she continued as matriarch of the family and is much-loved by her children and grandchildren alike. She spent her days with family sharing laughter and memories during celebrations, family trips, and even on the most ordinary of days. She enjoyed dress-making, sewing, and cooking. She instilled her Filipino values among the family with love, faith, and food.
In 2007, she was awarded “Parent of the Year” by the Naic Association of San Diego, Inc (NASDI). In her acceptance speech, she proudly remarked that her “real wealth” is her children and their families and they are priceless!
Our mother’s spirit lives on in values she inspired in each of us. We carry her legacy in our hearts, and we honor her by continuing to live with the kindness, resilience, and joy she showed us. We are who we are as a family because of her. We are who we are as individuals because of her. She is the root of all of us and we thank her for everything.
