Daniel Boyd Prager's Obituary
Daniel B. Prager, 93, of San Diego, California, passed away peacefully at home on March 17, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born to Daniel H. and Julia E. S. Prager on August 8, 1932.
Dan or Danny, as he was known, was a good student through his school years. He graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in 1950 and was an active alumnus all his life, organizing and attending class reunions. A natural athlete, he participated and lettered in Track and Field, and Basketball. Upon joining the United States Army in 1951,he served first as a Physical Training leader and then as a Military Policeman primarily in Tokyo, Japan. He vividly remembered his time in training and on duty and had many stories about his experiences in the military. When he returned home, he attended San Diego Jr College and Cal Western University on athletic scholarship.
He started his career at San Diego Gas & Electric in 1956 and happily worked as a lineman for almost 40 years with the “Beach Cities” crew.
He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served as a Scout leader for many years and in the Bishopric. Dan loved to perform in the “Roadshow” plays and supported his family’s activities and participation there.
In November 1958, Dan married his sweetheart, Muriel (Lani) K.E. of Maui (Territory of Hawaii) and fondly remembered his times visiting, surfing, filming with his Super 8 and preparing the lu’au with her family. Together they had four children, Dalani T. (Ahmed), Sheri S. (Darren), Daniel (Amy) and Joanna P. (Paul), who then produced 15 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren, all of whom he loved and was very proud of.
Dan remained close to and is survived by his brother, Wm Douglas Prager (Maria) and sister Gloria J. Prager.
He was a lifelong sports enthusiast and participated in City and Recreation League Basketball and Softball, both slow and fast pitch, for his SDG&E and Church sponsored teams for many years. He loved his experiences as a young Boy Scout during the WWII years and worked tirelessly supporting the BSA in local troops and the San Diego Council throughout his adult life. He was a founding member of the San Diego Koi Society (1971) and raised prize winning koi fish. He was also a member of the Early Ford V8 club 1985 to present). He loved touring around the country to car events with his best friend Jerry in his 1997 Mercury Coupe and his blue 1940 Mercury 4-door Convertible, both of which he did full bolt-off restorations.
Dan spent many years creating and building “Prager’s Park” for his family. He enjoyed watching most sports(except golf!), solving crossword puzzles, helping and visiting neighbors, Taco Bell Tuesdays with the boys and dressing as Santa for various parties and
events for 50 years. In his later years he could be found sitting on the front porch every morning, handing out dog treats and sharing stories with friends, neighbors and passersby. There wasn’t a dog in the neighborhood who didn’t turn right up the front walk to visit him, and he knew all their names. Dan (also known as Dad) will be greatly missed and fondly remembered for his off-beat humor and prolific storytelling, his encyclopedic mind, his iron-clad memory and lush mane of hair, and especially for his smile, generosity and kindness, which he shared with everyone. Aloha Dad, till we meet again.
Dan’s family wishes to humbly thank all those who have reached out with condolences, delicious meals and beautiful bouquets, your kindness is deeply appreciated.
A Memorial/Celebration of Life will be held in August 2026, details to be announced later.
