Darwin Ray Sinclair
July 9, 2020
Darwin Ray Sinclair was born on December 28th 1930 an only child to Ray and Mildred Sinclair in Kansas. His family moved to San Diego during his High School years where he attended Grossmont High. He joined the Navy in 1949 and served for 3 years much of this time in Pensacola, FL. Returning to San Diego he was encouraged by a friend to become a police officer. He started in the El Cajon Police Department but moved over to the Sheriff Department for a brief time before returning to ECPD. The best part of his life began in the mid-60s when he ran into a high school friend Alice (Wilson) Martin. They married in 1966 blending together children from previous marriages, Sheri, Linda, Steve, Gary, and Terry. Their honeymoon was a family camping trip to Yellowstone with their 5 teenagers. This was only the beginning of many memorable family vacations and celebrations. As an El Cajon Police officer, he moved through the ranks as officer to sergeant, lieutenant and captain. Also during this time, he attended National University and San Diego State to earn his Master Degree while shuffling work, teaching Policing classes and his family life. In 1981, he was selected to serve as El Cajon Police Chief. He was a key organizer in getting the ECPD involved in the Mounted Police leading the Mother Goose Parade on horseback many times. He retired in 1988, after 34 service years with ECPD. Soon after Darwin’s retirement, he and Alice bought a motor coach and full timed traveling the USA. They even managed to travel several times over seas with friends enjoying the sights and history in many countries. In 2001, they replaced their home on wheels for a home in El Cajon to be near the family. July 1st, 2020, was their 54th Wedding Anniversary! Darwin never met a stranger. Whenever he was out and about, he would greet others with his smile and a kind greeting. His love for his family was great but more importantly he discovered the love of our wonderful Savior Jesus Christ, accepted His gift of salvation and was baptized. He will be truly missed by so many but we look forward to seeing him again in our heavenly forever home. He leaves behind his wife Alice and his five children plus a son-in-law and two daughter in-laws, grandchildren and great grandchildren which he loved and adored. May his smile be forever engraved in our minds and his love for God, family and all he met is cherished.
