Deborah Lynn Schrier-Rape's Obituary
Deborah Lynn Schrier-Rape of Coronado, California passed away unexpectedly on June 27, 2018. She was 56 years old. Debbie was a loving wife to her husband of 34 years, Scott Rape, and committed mother to son Austin Rape and daughters Ashley Rape Zaslav and Avery Rape. She was also a tender and devoted daughter to parents Robert and Barbara Schrier and sibling to brothers David, Douglas and Derek Schrier, and sister Denise Schrier Cetta. Debbie also leaves behind ten nieces and nephews she supported and adored: Blake, Claire, Tyler, Courtney, Eloise, Gage and Gigi Schrier and Max, Declan and Francesca Cetta.Debbie embodied the motto “give more than you receive.” She reveled in making even ordinary occasions extraordinary for those she loved – finding everyone that perfect gift, baking pies on Thanksgiving, and putting on themed birthday celebrations for her children. Debbie was happiest cheering on the sidelines. As a soccer-mom extraordinaire she skillfully blended an insistence on hard-work with passion and encouragement – unleashing the potential in all those around her.Debbie grew up in Denver, Colorado and attended Smoky Hill High School. After graduating magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana and Stanford Law School with distinction (Order of the Coif), Debbie became a nationally recognized expert in bankruptcy law. She rose to the top of her profession as a highly respected and beloved law partner to those at Goodwin Procter LLP, Andrews Kurth LLP and Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP. Debbie also served as irreplaceable in-house counsel at SRPC, Inc., Zale Corporation and Mariner Systems. During her 30-year career she advised on a large number of corporate reorganizations, including helping to secure a multi-billion-dollar victory in the United States Supreme Court on behalf of NextWave Telecom. Debbie was a trailblazer for women in the legal profession and relished the opportunity to mentor young professionals.Debbie will certainly be remembered as relentless – a force of nature, using her iron will to prevail as a nationally-ranked middle-distance runner and as an advocate for her clients in a court of law. But those who knew her best will first bring to mind Debbie’s fierce loyalty to those she loved: her children, family, friends, her beloved pug, Sammi, and, most of all, her high school sweetheart and husband, Scott. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to honor what brought Debbie the most joy – supporting and bringing a smile to those around her. We ask that people remember her by giving to a cause dear to them. The family has chosen to support the following causes close to Debbie’s heart:Moores Cancer Center Stem Cell ProgramPug Rescue of San DiegoDuke Women’s Soccer – Select ‘Search For An Area’ & Enter ‘Varsity Club – Soccer (Women)’
