Demetra Bea Nicholas' Obituary
Beulah (Demetra) Nicholas, passed away peacefully on 9/20/15 with her family at her side. Bea was born on December 2, 1924 at Mercy Hospital in San Diego, to Peter and Angelina Stamatopoulos. Bea had three siblings: Catherine, George, and Stella and was preceded in death by Stella and George.Bea attended Hover High School and Diego State University, from which she graduated in 1947 with a business degree with emphasis on accounting and bookkeeping. While at San Diego State, she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. Bea studied the violin for many years and became an accomplished musician. After completing her education, she was offered a position with the San Diego Symphony, but instead, accepted employment with Bonham Brothers Mortuary in San Diego as its chief bookkeeper.Bea and Nick Nicholas met through the Greek community in San Diego. They were married at the St. Spyridon Church on August 26, 1951 and were the first couple to be married there. Bea and Nick were successful as business owners and in managing their real estate holdings. They worked together as a team for many years, and enjoyed the fruits of their labor and investments. Bea was an active participant in the Silvergate Unit of Rady Children’s Hospital, and served as the unit treasurer for many years. The Silvergate unit specialized in hand-beaded straw purses which were made by the unit members. Over many years, Bea spent countless hours beading purses which are still cherished by many Point Loma residents. Bea was an accomplished seamstress, cook, and homemaker. She instilled her love of cuisine and the arts in her family. Bea also enjoyed travel, reading, and tending her garden, especially her beautiful roses.Bea is survived by husband Nick Nicholas, sons James and Peter Nicholas, daughter Adrienne Churchill, son-in-law James Churchill, sister Catherine Limneos and brother-in-law John Limneos, grandchildren Alexis, Brooke, and William Nicholas, Andreas and Willy Nicholas, and many nieces and nephews.Bea will be remembered for her quiet grace, devotion to her family, her beauty, and intelligence. Above all, she thought of others before herself. Bea will remain forever in the hearts and minds of her family and friends, and although her passing has left a void that cannot be filled, we are thankful for our time together and the many beautiful memories we share.A Trisagon Service will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at Greenwood Mortuary’s Salli Lynn Chapel, 4300 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113.
