Dolores Serrano's Obituary
Dolores Serrano, better known as “Lolita”, “Lola” or “abuela”, was born on December 3, 1937, in San Juan de Amula, a small town in Jalisco, Mexico. She was the eldest child of Francisco Franco and Guadalupe Villa. She came from humble origins, where money was scarce but where a loving and caring family raised an extraordinary human being. She had just finished third grade when her father died unexpectedly, and as it so often happened in those days, she had to leave school and begin to help support her younger siblings: Petra, Marina, Crescencia, Salomón and Benjamín. At the young age of nine, she was forced to leave her home and family to do domestic work for other families, like ironing clothes, cooking and making chocolate.
In 1957, she moved to Tijuana, Baja California to find work in the United States. In 1962, she married Francisco Serrano, a landscaper. Together they raised a family of three. In 1977, they immigrated to Chula Vista, California where they lived the remainder of their lives together.
Pancho and Lola enjoyed spending quiet time together reminiscing of times gone by. In the evenings, they would tend to their garden and their beautiful fruit trees. When warm weather rolled around, camping and admiring the scenery at the beach or near hot springs was also a fun activity.
Lola found the most joy in cooking. She was known for her delicious birria, pozole, spicy salsa and menudo. Even in the later years, as she got older and her aches and pains became more evident, she would always make it a point of cooking a special birthday dinner for her loved ones. Her cooking was unmatched because her “love seasoning” gave any dish that special touch that only “abuela” could muster.
Lola was a devout Catholic; she listened to mass daily at 6 a.m. and prayed the rosary more than once a day. In her nightly prayers, she was sure to pray for the wellbeing of each one of her family members, naming them one by one.
In 1998, she became a proud US citizen and always stressed to all who would listen, the importance of voting in every election. She loved traveling and visited Europe twice; her favorite being the Holy Land. Canada, New York, Las Vegas were other places she enjoyed. Her connection to her roots ran deep and she made it a point of visiting her hometown multiple times a year. She passed away on June 7th, 2022, in her Chula Vista home.
She is survived by her children: Edna, Antonio & Richard; her grandchildren: Dania, Esteban, Adriana, Janice, Antonio, Christian & Viviana and great-grandchildren: Giannah, Maya, Esteban, Riley & River. She is physically gone but will live forever in the hearts and minds of all her loved ones. Her family will always be grateful for the blessing of having such a special person in their lives. She will be greatly missed!
Dolores Serrano mejor conocida como “Lolita”, “Lola” o “abuela”, nació el 3 de diciembre de 1937 en San Juan de Amula, un pueblito en Jalisco, México. Fue la hija mayor de Francisco Franco y Guadalupe Villa. Sus orígenes fueron humildes, donde el dinero era escaso, pero en abundancia, el cariño y cuidado de su familia, formación que contribuyó a formar a un ser excepcional. Al terminar el tercer grado de primaria, muere su padre inesperadamente. Como era típico en esos tiempos, Lola tuvo que trabajar para así ayudar a mantener a sus hermanos menores: Petra, Marina, Crescencia, Salomón y Benjamín. A la tierna edad de 9 años, se vio en la necesidad de dejar a su familia para realizar labores domésticas en casas de otros; sus labores incluían planchar, cocinar y hacer chocolate.
En 1957 se trasladó a Tijuana, Baja California para así poder buscar trabajo en los Estados Unidos. En 1962 contrae matrimonio con Francisco Serrano, quien se dedicaba a la jardinería. Formaron una familia con tres hijos. En 1977, emigraron a Chula Vista, California, donde vivieron el resto de sus vidas.
Pancho y Lola disfrutaban de la tranquilidad que acompañaba su vida diaria, recordando y reviviendo los momentos memorables de sus vidas pasadas. En las tardes cuidaban del jardín de su casa y de los numerosos árboles frutales. Cuando el clima lo permitía, disfrutaban de acampar en playas o cerca de aguas termales, admirando los paisajes naturales.
Lola sentía mayor alegría y satisfacción en los momentos en que cocinaba para su familia. Se le conocía por su deliciosa birria, pozole, salsa picante y menudo. Aun en los últimos años, cuando sus dolencias y achaques eran evidentes, le encantaba preparar la cena de celebración de cumpleaños para todos sus familiares. Su sazón era sin igual, tal vez porque el ¨sazón de amor¨ añadía un toque especial a todos sus platillos.
Lola fue una católica devota; escuchaba misa todas las mañanas a las 6 en punto, y rezaba el rosario más de una vez al día. Todas las noches, oraba por el bienestar de todos sus seres queridos, mencionando el nombre de todos y cada uno en sus oraciones.
En 1998, se convirtió en orgullosa ciudadana estadounidense y por lo mismo solía enfatizar a todo quien la quisiera escuchar, sobre la importancia de votar en todas las elecciones. Cada vez que tenía la oportunidad, le encantaba viajar. Viajó a Europa dos veces, siendo la “Tierra Santa” su lugar favorito. Hawái, Canadá, Nueva York, y Las Vegas fueron otros lugares que ella disfrutó. Lola nunca olvidó sus raíces y acostumbraba viajar a su pueblo natal de San Juan de Amula varias veces en el año.
Lola falleció el 7 de junio de 2022 en su casa de Chula Vista. Le sobreviven sus hijos: Edna, Antonio y Richard; nietos: Dania, Esteban, Adriana, Janice, Antonio, Christian & Viviana; bisnietos: Giannah, Maya, Esteban, Riley & River. Lola ya no está entre nosotros, pero vivirá siempre en los recuerdos y el corazón de sus seres queridos. Su familia siempre agradecerá la bendición de que en sus vidas estuviera presente un ser tan especial. ¡Se le extrañará siempre!
