Dr. Donald F. Bean July 5, 1939 – July 17, 2025 Dr. Donald F. Bean, a dedicated physician, Air Force veteran, and beloved partner, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2025, in San Diego, California. He was 86 years old. Born in Menomonie, Wisconsin, on July 5, 1939, to Orin True Bean and Helen Theresa Sherry, Don moved with his family to Mineral Point at the age of five. He completed his education there, graduating from Mineral Point High School, and went on to attend Beloit College. During his college years, he balanced his academic pursuits with summers working as a lifeguard at the local pool. In 1965, Don earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University. He began his surgical internship at the University of Colorado and, in 1966, joined the U.S. Air Force. After completing Flight Surgeon School at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, he was stationed in Ubon, Thailand, where he served as the base Flight Surgeon during the Vietnam War. After returning to the United States, Don was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base in California. In 1969, he began his surgical residency at the University of Arizona in Tucson. The following year, he moved to Palmdale, California, working in the emergency room at Palmdale General Hospital before opening a private practice in Lancaster. Don was a respected leader in the medical community, serving as Chief of Medical Staff at Antelope Valley Hospital for eight years and on its Board of Directors for four more. In 2004, he retired to San Diego with his partner, Larry Word. Don was preceded in death by his parents and his only sibling, Sherry Ann Bean (Shaffer). Don will be remembered for his sharp mind, compassionate care, and gentle presence. He leaves behind a legacy of service, healing, and love that touched countless lives throughout his career and personal life. He is survived by his partner of 46 years, Larry Word.
