Dorothy McGruder Edwards' Obituary
Dorothy Arvariel was the fifth child born to Alphonso and Dora McGruder on January 4, 1932 in Sawyerville, Alabama. She loved the Lord and accepted Christ at an early age. Dorothy attended public schools in Alabama during her formal years where she excelled in most subjects prior to graduating high school. She later attended Alabama A & M University in Huntsville, Alabama.
In 1956 she married Robert Lee Edwards, and from this union they were blessed with four wonderful sons. Dorothy united with St. Paul United Methodist Church in San Diego, CA in 1958, where she selflessly and passionately served her church in many capacities to include: Senior Choir, Secretary of Administrative Council, Adult Sunday School Teacher, Director of Gingerbread Nursery, Stewardess Board, United Methodist Women's Group and Secretary of the Finance Committee.
She was employed with the Gingerbread Day Care Center where she serwed as Assistant Director, City School's Adult Education Department and Juvenile Court School. She started a Tutorial Program for the youth of the community as well as a Share Food Program to assist persons with a better use of their food dollars and better Nutrition in the process.
Dorothy was blessed with a loving family and she will be greatly missed by so many! She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee, her son, Robert Lawrence, and her siblings, Charles, Elmer, Alphonso, and Anita.
She is survived by her children: Michael (Jacinta), Eric, and Paul (Josefina); five grandchildren: Jasmine, Vanessa, Robert Jerome, Breanna, and Crystal; eight great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Alphonso, Orlando McGruder and Betty Shaw. She had a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and great friends who will also cherish her memory.
