Dorothy M. Jackson Greenwood's Obituary
Dorothy Mae Filyaw was born on March 16, 1928, to the late Frances Ada and William Filyaw in Leland, North Carolina. She was educated in the Brunswick County school system where she graduated from Williston High School in 1946. At an early age Dorothy accepted Christ as her Savior. In 1950 Dorothy married George Jackson who was in the military. They were subsequently divorced several years later. From this union were born two daughters, Barbara Jean and Geraldine (Geri) Maria Jackson. Dorothy was a loving and supportive mother. Extended family includes the Glass, Harrington, Hayter and Tyler families.
Dorothy previously resided in San Diego with her husband and children from 1951-1959. After residing in North Carolina, Connecticut, and Northern California Dorothy relocated to San Diego with her daughters in 1961. She joined Mt. Sinai Baptist Church where she served in several capacities including as a member of the Alter Guild, Usher Board and Children’s Nursery. In 2016 she received a plaque from Mt. Sinai Baptist Church recognizing her for her outstanding dedication and faithful service to the church which she cherished.
One of the joys of Dorothy’s life was working with children and celebrating their growth and accomplishments. She owned a Day Care Home for 20 years. She also received several commendations from city and state officials for volunteering with the Foster Grandparent’s program at St. Vincent de Paul’s. She also enjoyed fishing with her dear friends and traveling with her daughters.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her mother and father Frances Ada and William Filyaw; three brothers William and Nathaniel Filyaw and Charles Henry Hewitt; and three sisters, Aletha and Alene Hankins and Gracie Baldwin.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters Barbara Groner (Marvin) and Geraldine (Geri) Rogers, her Goddaughter, Joyce Jackson; three grandsons Marcus Groner, Edward Groner (Marcus) and Aaron Groner and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and wonderful friends.
