Edith Violet Mills' Obituary
Edith Violet Paynter was born on September 11, 1913. Violet, as she was known, was the second of four children born to Chester and Elizabeth Paynter. Violet spent her early life in Corona, California where her father owned a watermelon farm. There she met the love of her life, Floyd Mills, Sr., when he visited the farm with a friend. Violet and Floyd were married December 28, 1929, a marriage that lasted 77 years until Floyd passed away April 11, 2007. Their marriage produced three children, Edith, Chester, and Floyd, Jr. Traveling extensively with her husband and family throughout his Navy and post-retirement careers, Violet lived in Boston, Massachusetts; Norfolk, Virginia; Guam; Kwajalein; Port Hueneme, and Santa Paula, California, as well as various other locations. For most of her life she and Floyd made their home in National City, California.Violet was a homemaker, caregiver, and cake decorator. She crocheted beautifully, was an avid reader, and an incredible gardener. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and candy making for friends and family. Her greatest talent and proudest accomplishment was being a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother.Violet suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and was a resident of Fredericka Manor in Chula Vista, California for the past five years.Violet was preceded in death by husband Floyd Mills, Sr. and infant son Chester Mills; brother Carl (Freda) Paynter; sisters Viola (Eustace) John, and Vera (Robert) Armstrong. She is survived by her son Floyd (Jean) Mills, Jr., daughter Edith (Jay) Small; six grandsons: Earl, Jamie, Terry, Timmy, Scott, and David; three granddaughters: Violet, Vera, and Sarah; 13 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
