Burkey, Edwina Alix's Obituary
Edwina Alix (Alvarado) Burkey, a member of the Choctaw Nation was born on June 27, 1942 to Rosalind & Edward Alexander Alvarado II. Edwina was the eldest of 5 siblings. Whom she is preceded in death by Carolyn (Alvarado) Hansen, Edward Alexander Alvarado III, Edward Alvarado IV and William Paul Alvarado and her parents Rosalind & Edward Alexander Alvarado II. She was raised in Los Angeles, Ca and graduated from Pasadena High School and met Thomas Ernest Sawyer. They married July 29,1960 for 19 years and had 5 children Deborah, Cheryl, Louise, Thomas II and Edward. They moved to San Diego in the 70’s where she would make wedding cakes, sell and deliver them. She was a homemaker for several years. She remarried December 7, 1979 to James (Dutch) Burkey until his passing November 20, 1995. Edwina worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant for the County of San Diego at Edgemoor for 18yrs where she enjoyed working and cooking with her co-workers. She also loved all her patients. She paved the way to the Nursing field for her daughters and granddaughters. Edwina helped raise her grandchildren. She was not just a mother to her children but to many extended family members. Edwina loved to decorate cakes, quilting, painting, scrap booking, crochet, gardening, doll making, sewing, reading, cooking, Edwina loved to see all the children and babies, every year she loved to make Christmas cookies for all her family. Edwina took cooking classes, art and craft classes, tea party class, calligraphy class, stamp class. There is so much more we could say about her, she was so very loved and she loved everyone.
Edwina passed away peacefully in her home on November 8, 2024 she was surrounded by several generations of her loving family. Edwina is survived by her children Deborah, Cheryl, Louise, Thomas II, Edward, her son in law Henry and daughter in laws Lydia and Demitria, 21 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson.
