Thank you for sharing this with us, John, and also thank you for keeping an eye on him for us.
Eldon was a great next-door neighbor and more importantly, a great friend. Because I serve in the Marine Corps and my son loves everything military, he equally loved to hear the history of our Great Wars and was truly astonished when I told him that "Mr. Eldon served in WWII." Sammy truly felt that he was living next door to a hero and for good reason. Eldon was a gentleman and a gentle-man. He is truly missed and we think about him often. The other thing I recall is how Eldon was very meticulous about his trash bins!! He was always the first to bring 'em out and the first to take 'em back in. Because he was along in years, on some days the bins were not out in the morning (if I missed seeing them the night before) I would instantly worry. But alas, this did not happen often and I was finally assured everything was okay when I heard him start up his car and drive off!! My wife and I would talk, as if almost preparing ourselves, about the day the trash bins would not be out by Eldon's hand and thus giving us the sign that he has made his final travel plans home. Eldon, it was a pleasure to meet and know you. Thank you for the past five years. Thank you for your service, selflessness and sacrifice and for imparting your wisdom to those of us who were lucky enough to know and spend time with you. Although we were over a generation apart I am glad to know we shared commonality as brothers in arms. Rest in peace, Warrior. V/r, John H. Schweitzer Major, USMCR
What a sweet photo! Made me cry.
Thanks for posting these! They are treasures.
Because he loves me, says the Lord, "I will rescue him. I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name."
Eldon was an amazing great-grandfather. I will never forget all of the times we shared together. I can't even begin to pick a favorite memory or story he shared because they are all equally wonderful. He loved his great-great-grandson (my son) so very much! They shared such a special bond the last few weeks of Eldons life. They never spoke a word to each other but you could tell they were best friends. Eldon will always have a special place in our hearts.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mona Jean a few times over the years. She was a gifted seamstress and I have a piece of her quilting talent that I hang up every Christmas. Eldon gave it to me a few years after I was married and I have always loved getting it out and tying candy canes on it and hanging it on the wall. It has and will always remind me of the two of them.
Love the pictures! Thanks for sharing them❤️
That's sweet. I know that one of his army friends told him that "your partners needs are just as great as your own". I wonder if that is a poem his friend shared with him and he passed it on to Grandma?
