Elvira Aficial Aquino's Obituary
Elvira Aficial Aquino, 77, of San Diego, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2023, under the care of LakeView Hospice Home, with her family by her side.
She was born to the late Mauro Sr. and Maxima Aficial in the Philippines on January 24, 1946. Elvira graduated from Calasiao High School in 1961, receiving the Mathematician of the Year award. She went on to pursue a higher education, receiving a Bachelor’s degree at Pangasinan Normal School in Bayambang, Pangasinan, in 1965 with Cum Laude honors, then a Master of Arts in Science Education degree from Saint Louis University (Baguio City) in 1977.
She married Aquilino Aquino in 1970, and they lived together in Bued Calasiao, Pangasinan, for 20 + years, where she was a principal at Bued West Elementary School. They migrated to San Diego in May 1993, petitioned by her brother Tony Aficial. She had various jobs, including resident manager of properties and cashier at Sycuan and Viejas Casino, and eventually became the sole caregiver to her parents.
Elvira is survived by her husband, Aquilino Aquino, and three children: Greg (Gayle) Aquino of Ewa Beach, HI; Leo Aquino of Calasiao, Philippines, and Ellin Aquino of San Diego, CA; and predeceased by her eldest child, Ariel Aficial. She is survived by her siblings Ely (Jennifer) Aficial of Bayambang, Pangasinan, Philippines; Tony (Natti) Aficial of Dinalaoan Calasiao, Pangasinan Philippines; Valentino (Cecile) Aficial of San Diego, CA; Rosalinda (Nestor) Perez of Hercules, CA, Arthur (Elenor) Aficial of San Diego, CA, Mauro (Jean) Aficial Jr. of Irvine, CA and Benjie Aficial of San Diego, CA; and predeceased by brothers Serafin and Adolfo Aficial. Her eight grandchildren also survive her: Naedeen, Jarreth, Jarelene, Matthew, Micah, Gwyneth, Margaret, and Gabriel.
Elvira was an accomplished schoolteacher and principal who loved music. She passed her appreciation for music to all her children and grandchildren. Quite often, oldies and Christian gospel would be her go-to. More importantly, Elvira loved the Lord and often leaned on these three scriptures: 1 John 4:19, Joshua 1:9, and Galatians 5:22-23.
Viewing will be held on Thursday, December 28, 2023, from 5 - 9 p.m. at Greenwood Mortuary. A service followed by the burial will be held the following day on Friday, December 29, 2023, starting at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to follow, TBA.
Flowers are accepted at the mortuary the day prior, up until the start of the viewing.
