Frances F. Wong's Obituary
Frances F. Wong Born in China, Frances Wong immigrated to New York with her family at the age of 16. She quickly adapted to her new life, working both at a bank and at a Chinese bakery in New York City. It was during this time that she met her future husband, Tom, through their respective bosses—a meeting that began a lifelong partnership built on love, hard work, and devotion to family. In 1975, Frances and Tom moved to New Jersey, where Frances worked from home sewing garments for department stores while also caring for their growing family. A family vacation to California in 1980 changed everything—they fell in love with the state and decided to make it their new home. In 1981, they relocated to San Diego, where together they opened Jade East, a Chinese fast-food restaurant at San Diego State University. Frances and Tom ran the restaurant for 13 years, building a loyal following among students and staff, until the building was closed due to structural concerns after years of earthquake damage. As the restaurant chapter came to a close, a new opportunity emerged through the SDSU Foundation—a janitorial contract that offered more flexibility and free time. This change in pace allowed Frances and Tom to begin a daily walking routine at Lake Murray, a ritual that became part of their lives for more than 30 years. Their consistent presence made them familiar faces and dear friends to many fellow walkers who shared their mornings around the lake. In retirement, Frances found her greatest joy in caring for her grandchildren and cooking for her family. Preparing everyone’s favorite dishes was her love language—a quiet yet powerful way she expressed how deeply she cared for those around her. Frances passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, with her husband Tom and children Benson and Hannah by her side, following complications from a stroke. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Diabetes Association in Frances’ memory. Her warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit will be forever missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
