George Payne's Obituary
IN LOVING MEMORY
George “GP” Payne, Born on March 23, 1926 to Ibby Butler and Julius Payne, passed away peacefully at the age of 98. His vibrant spirit and zest for life touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Born in Natchez, Mississippi, George’s journey took him from the Deep South to the vibrant streets of New Orleans, and eventually to the sunny shores of San Diego, where he spent over five decades.
George had an insatiable appetite for life, and his passions were as diverse as they were colorful. He relished the smoky aroma of BBQ and the spicy flavors of Mexican cuisine. His laughter echoed through the room as he watched Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor perform their comedic magic. Reggae tunes and Janet Jackson’s melodic voice provided the soundtrack to his days, and he danced with abandon, hips swaying to the rhythm.
Sunday afternoons were reserved for Kung Fu movie marathons, where he’d mimic the moves of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. George’s garden was his sanctuary—a place where he nurtured both flowers and memories. His camera, adorned with extra lenses, captured the beauty of life, from sunsets to candid family moments. And oh, how he loved dogs—their loyalty and playfulness brought him immense joy.
George’s legacy lives on through his grandkids, who inherited his love for life. The beat of congos and drums will forever echo in our hearts, reminding us of his rhythm. And those long drives he took, windows down, wind in his hair—they symbolize the journey of a man who embraced every twist and turn.
George’s legacy is carried on by his loving family. He was preceded in death by his former wives, Margaret Banks and Emma Shearer, and is survived by, Marlene Lukacs. His memory will be cherished by his children, Rita Presbery, the late Denise Payne, Shawnte’ Payne, and Danielle Payne, as well as his adored grandchildren, Cameron, Mordeke', Lamont, Warren, Naisha, Leondra, Michael, Bobby, Nia, Maya, Te'shaun, and Dai’Vion.
As we bid farewell to “GP”, let us celebrate the tapestry of his life—a life well-lived, filled with laughter, love, and adventure. His spirit, wisdom, and comedic aura will be missed by all who knew him. Rest in peace, dear George. Your memory dances on. Au revoir!
