Charles and I were able to catch Rams vs 49ers last year at the NFC playoffs. He was a 49ers fan and always has been. Me a Rams fan. He came down from Bakersfield to spend the night and we had a great time catching up and talking about old times. This was the last time I saw my brother in person and the last thing I said to him was “I love you bro”. I am so glad and thankful that I had that opportunity to say that. We had many other conversations after then over the phone but at least he knew how I felt. We had a great relationship as I was growing up. He was my “big brother”, 8 years older than me. I still remember him making me sit down and turning the lights off and listening to Elton John’s “Funeral for a Friend”, because it was a “scary” song, but turns into an upbeat one after the intro. I remember when he gave me an Elton cassette, “Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player” because the cassette the actual tape had broken. I took the cassette apart and spliced it together with Scotch tape and reassembled it and it worked! He was surprised that I could fix it but he let me keep the cassette, which I continued to enjoy for years. I always think of my brother when I hear those songs. Later, when he had moved out on his own, he had a killer sound system and I would come over to his place and we would listen to music. He gave me that bug and is responsible for my love of great sounding stereo equipment.
This last football season, Charles was the big winner in my football pool. He insisted that I hang on to the winnings and use them to pay for a nice meal for the whole family for a get together in Bakersfield, which we had talked about doing in “late Spring”, which sadly, is right about now. I sure wish we had that get together now. My advice to anyone reading this is don’t put off such opportunities. You may regret it, as I do.
He was always very kind to me and made me feel special. I will miss my brother.
Love you bro. Rest in peace.
