Gwendolyn E. Wilson's Obituary
A Spirit of Light
Gwendolyn Wilson was born in Bronx, New York, on June 3, 1958 to Clement and Pearl Wilson. The youngest of six siblings, Gwen's life journey was underscored by a bright and unwavering spirit and a passion for connecting with others.
She spent much of her childhood in the borough of Queens. Gwen's vibrant spirit and enthusiasm for life shone brightly during her school days, where she showcased her talents as a sea cadet, cheerleader, and dancer.
Gwen's love for dance and deep appreciation for African culture led her to become an integral part of an African Dance Troupe, captivating audiences throughout the bustling streets of New York City. Her commitment to introducing young minds to the wonders of music, dance, and the rich history of Africa garnered her well-deserved recognition.
After high school, Gwen pursued higher education at Kingsborough Community College, where she excelled academically and socially. During her time there, she initiated the African Studies Group, fostering cultural understanding and unity among diverse ethnic communities within the college and in the broader community.
Upon graduation, Gwen explored various career paths, but her heart found its true calling in the airline industry. Starting as a reservationist at New York Airlines, she quickly ascended to the role of a flight attendant, a position she held for the majority of her career. Gwen found immense joy in her work, and utilized her position as a platform to serve others with a radiant smile and infectious laughter. When she wasn’t working, she enjoyed the benefit of traveling, exploring the country and the world.
Gwen relocated to California in the early 90s, where she became instrumental in caring for her beloved mother, Pearl, during the latter years of her life.
The deepest and most profound connection in her life was undoubtedly with her family and friends – Her daily calls and interactions with her brother and sisters allowed her to remain close to all of them; she adored her nieces and nephews; and she was particularly gifted at sustaining long-standing friendships both near and far. Gwen's affection for her loved ones took precedence over phone etiquette, as she would reach out via call or text at any time, even during the early hours of the morning. Regardless of the hour, Gwen's calls rarely went unanswered and especially by her nieces and nephews because they knew it was Auntie Gwen on the line. She consistently offered them advice and support, whether solicited or not, always emphasizing the importance of family. All in all, she had a personality that truly embraced a room. Gwen's heart extended beyond her human family to all of her beloved dogs, her most recent fur babies being Zoey and Snoop.
Facing numerous health challenges over the last 10 months, Gwen transitioned to her eternal home on September 6, 2023.
Left to hold dear the cherished memories of Gwen are her brother Ivan, her sisters Yvonne, Patsy, Mitsy (Greg), and Lorraine (Dave); and her devoted friend, Willy Tyrone Shipley. She leaves behind a legacy that extends to her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and a vast network of dear family and friends.
