Hazel Baskin's Obituary
Hazel Chavis, born September 8, 1927, in Welsh, Louisiana, was the cherished daughter of Anita Senegal and Stephen Chavis. Hazel only had the chance to experience her own mother for 3 months. She also never had the chance to meet her brother, Stephen. She was soon taken in by her Grandparents, Leon and Madeline Senegal, and raised until her aunt affectionately known as, Aunt Deuce took her in. The early loss of her mother and brother added with the extreme love shown from her family inspired her ability to shape deep bonds with anyone who crossed her path. Hazel’s passing leaves a legacy of love, resilience and grace and will be remembered for her unwavering spirit and the warmth she shared with everyone who knew her. Hazel was affectionately known as “Mother” for her nurturing spirit, she touched countless lives with her kindness and compassion. Mother was a resilient military wife, married to John Houston Sr. for 12 years. During their marriage, they moved to San Diego in the early 1940s, bringing a few family members along to start a new chapter in life. Together, they built a family, raising their children: Larry Houston, John Westley Houston Jr., Ronald Houston, Deborah Houston (Martino), Evelyn Houston, Melody Houston (El-Amin Nelson), Monica Houston, Kimber Houston, amidst the challenges and sacrifices that came with military life. However, their marriage eventually ended, marking a turning point in her life. Mother found love again when she married Kamara Baskin Sr.. Mother and Kamara Sr’s encounter blossomed into a lifelong love story of 64 years. Together, “Mother” and Kamara Sr. raised a loving and vibrant family, including: Steven Baskin, Kamara Baskin Jr., Leon Baskin, and Shalamon Baskin. Their home was a place of warmth, joy, and boundless love and laughter filled with a never ending musical playlist, with mother’s nurturing spirit and Kamara’s unwavering support at the heart of it all. Always the life of the party, Mother had the unique ability to make everyone around her feel like you were her favorite. Her vibrant presence will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy lives on through the family she created including her foster children. She passed away December 14, 2024 at home surrounded by her husband and family
