Hazel Ellen McCollum was born on July 1, 1917 In Lucas, Iowa and passed away on January 5, 2017 in San Diego, California. She was the daughter of Myrtle May Clark and Jessie Ralph Starkey.Hazel was raised in the farming community of Gettysburg, South Dakota. She worked during World War II in Seattle, Washington and in San Diego assisting in the war effort. She met her husband, Walter F. McCollum at a Seattle USO dance while he was on leave from the Navy during the war. They moved to San Diego where they raised their two children. They were married for 64 years until her husband, Walter passed away February 11, 2009. She was an active member of the Lemon Grove Methodist Church.Hazel is survived by her son, Ross Dennis McCollum (Jane), and daughter, Gail Anne Shepard (Jay); sister, Helen Cuplin; grandchildren, Denise Shepard, Christina Mortlock, Toria Rogers, Chad McCollum, Stacy Henderson, Ryan McCollum, and Sean McCollum; and great-grandchildren, Conrad and Hudson Mortlock, Jordan, Ethan, and Lauren Rogers, Maggie and Lars McCollum, Skye, Landon, Kate, and Eli Henderson, Hayden, Rebecca, Rachel, Hazel, and Benjamin McCollum, and Reese, Cruze, and Vivien McCollum.The family has scheduled a private service.
