Helen "Gayle" (McCoy) Christy's Obituary
Helen “Gayle” (McCoy) Christy was born on March 6, 1932 in Burkesville, KY to James A. and Ruby Jane McCoy and her brother James “Buddy” Gwinn. Her father was a farmer and an evangelistic Minister. The family moved to Buena Park, CA when she was in elementary school and lived in a house that they built on a street that they named Kentucky Drive. Gayle graduated from Anaheim High School and attended Pasadena College. She had many stories to tell of working at Weber Bookstore and driving a school bus.She met Wayne Ray Christy on a blind date that was set up by her best friend. She only agreed to go because she wanted to see the Icecapade show that was in town. Ray was in the Navy and much of their courtship was done through letters. When they were married, they continued to live on the same street as her parents. The military took the young family to live on the island of Guam, where they lived a tropical life for 2 years before settling in San Diego, CA.They joined University Avenue Church of the Nazarene, now known as Mission Church of the Nazarene and Gayle was an active member for 40 years. She enjoyed singing in the choir, participating in and leading bible study groups as well as helping and encouraging in any was that she could. Many happy times were had at their family cabin in Lake Arrowhead, CA and she always looked forward to visiting her “kinfolk” in Kentucky and Tennessee. Her love for the Lord overflowed in the many ways that she reached out and opened her home to those in her extended family and her community.Gayle is preceded in death by her husband in 1991 and is survived by three children; David (Loriann) Christy, Phillip (Kimberly) Christy and Cynthia (David) Stockwell, seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.Her joyful servant heart will be missed.
