Helene "Helen" Luers' Obituary
Helene “Helen” passed to eternal life on October 24, 2014, rejoining John, her beloved husband of 51 years. Helen passed away peacefully from natural causes in her home of 82 years. Helen was 105 years old and a dynamic and determined woman. She was born on July 16, 1909, the youngest of 6 children, in Dresden, Germany, to the late Friedrich and Anna (Richter) Zerche.In 1924 at the age of 15, Helen, determined to better herself, and her Mother left Hamburg, Germany on the ship “Resolute” to come to American. They arrived at Ellis Island, New York, September 26, 1924. From there they went to San Diego, after a brief stop in Santa Barbara. Helen married the love of her life, John Luers, on May 30, 1930. Helen became a United States Citizen on March 20, 1931. She lived in San Diego for over 90 years.Over the years Helen was active in a number of German Cultural Organizations, most of which no longer exist. She was a life member of the House of Germany, House of Pacific relations, Balboa Park. Because of the number of years that Helen lived in San Diego, she was voted in as a member of the San Diego Pioneers Women’s Club, usually open only to native San Diegans. That Club has since been disbanded.Helen was predeceased by her husband and grandson, Kirk. She is survived by her son D. John (Judy) of Downey, CA; grandsons: Eric of Bullhead City, AZ, Mark (Doreen) of Baltimore, MD, and Jeff (Lilia) of Eugene OR; Great grandchildren: Savannah, Sierra and Hunter.The family wishes to thank the Staff of Scripps Hospice for their care of Helen and especially her caregivers, Lupe, Jessamyn, and Joeena.Funeral services will be at the Salli Lynn Chapel, Greenwood Memorial Park, on Wednesday, November 5 at 1 PM.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Scripps Hospice, The Salvation Army, or Father Joe’s Village.
