Jessie Mae Watts' Obituary
August 9, 2023, Jessie Mae Watts, 88, peacefully passed away leaving behind a legacy of compassion and love.
Jessie was born February 7, 1935, in Ripley, MS to James William Hayes and Dora Cornelia (Wiliams) Hayes (Gates). Six of 7 children, their home was filled with love – a love she carried throughout life. In 1950 at the tender age of 15, she met Ed Watts and within 3 months they were married. Shortly thereafter they started a family with 2 daughters within 3 years and 8 more years later a son was born.
In her early years, Jessie worked in the textile industry, but as time moved on became a waitress. Throughout her career, Jessie made many lifelong friends with her warm smile and kind heart. In her spare time, she enjoyed planting fresh flowers in the spring and watching her azaleas bloom; she loved the colors of her plants and trees.
Jessie attended Elliston Ave Baptist Church where she was baptized by Brother John Bomar. She spoke often and highly of her church family, cherishing her time there. in July of 2023 she moved to San Diego to be with her daughter and while her time was cut short, the trip they made across country gave her the opportunity to see the country and create everlasting memories.
Jessie is predeceased by her husband Ed Watts, her daughter Barbara Watts and son Ed Watts, Jr. She leaves behind a daughter Diane Watts of San Diego, Rosemary Navarro of San Diego, 8 grandchildren – Christina of FLA And Tiffany, Heather, Trina, Tawnya and Tasha of OK –and 14 great grandchildren.
Jessie will be returning to Memphis where she will be placed by her husband Ed’s side. The date and time of her service is to be determined. In lieu of flowers we ask a donation to be made in her honor to St Jude’s Children’s Hospital. It was the wonderful charity close to her heart.
