Joanne Leslie Derr's Obituary
Joanne Leslie Derr, affectionately known as "Fluff," was born on March 31, 1955, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was the second of five children raised by her loving parents, Albert and Josephine Cherry. Joanne's journey began in the heart of the South but extended far beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of many.
In 1962, the Cherry family embarked on a new chapter, settling in the vibrant community of Southeast San Diego, California. It was here that Joanne and her siblings matured, surrounded by the sun-kissed shores and endless opportunities of the West Coast.
Fluff's educational path led her through Emerson Elementary, Fred Baker Elementary, Memorial Junior High, and Lincoln High, where she formed lifelong friendships.
At Trinity Baptist Church in San Diego, Joanne discovered her unwavering faith and love for Jesus at a young age, receiving her baptism. This spiritual foundation guided her throughout her life's journey.
Finding a nurturing home at New Creation Church, Fluff's caring nature truly flourished. Embracing the teachings of love, compassion, and selflessness, she found fulfillment in serving others. Fluff’s career choices, from a medical assistant at North Island to roles at Toys R Us and in caregiving, reflected her deep commitment to service.
Fluff's infectious personality and zest for life brought joy to all who knew her. With her warm smile and free spirit, she could light up any room and bring laughter wherever she went.
Her favorite pastimes included playing bingo, engaging in arts and crafts, showcasing her cooking skills, and cherishing moments with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, each affectionately given nicknames.
Beyond her carefree spirit, Fluff possessed profound wisdom. She understood the importance of seizing the moment and inspiring others to embrace life fully.
Throughout her life, Fluff touched countless hearts with her selflessness and compassion. Always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear, her impact on others was immeasurable, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness.
Though our dear Fluff departed from this world on March 5, 2024, her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she touched. As we mourn her passing, let us also celebrate her remarkable life and the countless blessings she brought to the world.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother Victoria Derr, mother Josephine Cherry, Father Albert L. Cherry Sr., grandson Nyzell Derr, Brother-in-law Robin V. Dunn, and cousins Sean Bullard and Gwen Walker.
She leaves to cherish her memory 5 children: Anthony L. Derr, Nyysha L. Sepulveda, Shauntrece L. Derr-Morris, Larry Muldrow, Deon A. Davis (Roshawnda), and Brittani Woods (Goddaughter). Her siblings: Pastor Patty A. Allen, Vanessa (Vickie) Cherry-Dunn, Wendy E. Cherry, and Albert L. Cherry Jr. (Brother). Bridgett Carlisle (Pebbles her God-sister). As well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, niece, nephews, and friends.
Rest in peace, dear Fluff. Your legacy of love and service will forever be cherished and remembered.
