John J Shughrou Jr's Obituary
Captain John J. Shughrou, Jr., United States Navy (Retired), passed away June 28, 2024, at his home in Murrieta, California. Jack was born June 1, 1930, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, to John J. Shughrou, Sr. and Teresa K. Noon. He was a 1948 graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Williamsport and 1952 graduate of Siena College in Loudonville, New York. After college, Jack entered the Naval Aviation Cadet (NAVCAD) program and earned his Navy Wings of Gold in April 1954.
He married Margaret L. Young of Williamsport on December 29, 1956. Jack and Peg enjoyed their Navy adventure and the friends they made while living in Norfolk, Virginia; Corpus Christi, Texas; Long Beach, California; Midway Island; Toms River, New Jersey; Chula Vista, California; Oxnard, California and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. When Jack retired, they moved back to Chula Vista and later to Murrieta. They were married 57 years until Peg’s passing in 2014.
Notable assignments during his Navy career include: Patrol Squadron 56 (VP-56) flying P5M Marlin seaplanes; U.S.S. Hornet (CVS-12) as Assistant Navigator; Naval Air Station Midway Island as Aircraft Maintenance Officer; Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron 111 (VAW-111), as Detachment 31 Officer in Charge aboard U.S.S Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31) flying the E-1B Tracer. Jack was the Commanding Officer of VAW-111 from March 1970 to April 1971. After his command tour, he served as an Air Strike Planner with the Seventh Air Force in Saigon, Vietnam during the 1972 Linebacker II operation which hastened the end of the Vietnam War. Jack retired from the Navy in July 1980.
A lifelong Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers fan, Jack rarely missed the games on television. He enjoyed second guessing manager decisions from Walter Alston to Dave Roberts. Jack is survived by five sons, David (Corinne), Michael (Nancy), Daniel (Leigh), Stephen (Jessica) and Peter (Patricia), nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. He will be interred with his wife at Miramar National Cemetery. A private family memorial service is planned, followed by a gathering to celebrate Jack’s life with friends.
