Joyce Estelle Boutte's Obituary
Joyce Boutte, died peacefully on August 29, 2022. She was 98 years old. She was born Joyce Estelle Powers on February 26, 1924, in Minneapolis, MN, daughter to Burns & Edith Powers and sister to 1 boy & 4 girls. She attended school, taking correspondence classes, in Kansas City, MO. Graduating from Midland, she became a meteorologist with the U.S. Weather Bureau, as WWII was taking on. While working in Rock Springs, WY, she corresponded with a young Navy sailor, Anthony Boutte, a Frenchman from New Iberia, LA. On March 21, 1945, Joyce & Tony were married by her parents' Lutheran pastor in Minneapolis. They had a very blessed life together, though, never having children, they had many friends. Their Navy life was very adventurous for them. Joyce was "Rosie the Riveter", working at the Guided Missile Plant, in San Diego, and later stationed in Guam. It was in Guam, where Joyce began, what would become a lifelong passion for golf. When they returned to San Diego, she joined the Bonita Golf Course women's club, actively playing until she was 95, and on occasion, enjoyed being ace player through the years. She also enjoyed walking early mornings with her walking buddies around Lake Murray. Joyce was a pioneer for celiac disease--a total gluten-free diet. Joyce's beloved Tony passed away in 1999. She is survived by her sister, Joan Thiel, a few cousins, and many nephews & nieces, and great nephews & great nieces. A celebration of Life will be held on September 23, 2022 at 1:00 p.m., at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in San Diego, CA. Donations can be made to the National Celiac Association, 1-888-4CELIAC. She will be buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.
