Karl Richard Hairston Jr.'s Obituary
Karl R. Hairston Jr.
November 30, 1952 – December 12, 2024
Karl “Ricky” Hairston Jr., beloved husband, father, brother, cousin, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024, at the age of seventy-two after an inspiring and courageous fight. Born on November 30, 1952, in Columbus, Ohio, Karl was the firstborn to proud parents Elma and Karl Hairston Sr. He later became big brother to his three loving sisters, Sharon, Vicki, and Delores, forming a close-knit family filled with love and laughter.
After serving honorably in the U.S. Navy, Karl embarked on a journey through various professions, always carrying with him a strong work ethic and a genuine care for others. His life changed forever when he met the love of his life, Yvonne Reid. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and adventure, welcoming two daughters, Jessica, and Jennifer, who became the center of Karl’s world.
Seeking new opportunities and a brighter future for his family, Karl packed his bags and moved to sunny San Diego, California, where he and Yvonne created a warm and nurturing home. As a devoted “Girl Dad,” Karl took immense pride in raising his daughters. Whether it was making his signature homemade oatmeal with raisins before school, crafting the tightest ponytails imaginable, helping with homework, or teaching them to swim, Karl embraced every moment of fatherhood with love and dedication. He also cherished trips back to Ohio to ensure his daughters understood the roots of his upbringing and the importance of family.
Karl’s dedication extended beyond his family to his work. Known for his professionalism, dependability, and collaborative spirit, he built strong relationships with colleagues throughout his career. Always arriving in a freshly pressed uniform and shiny boots, Karl brought his characteristic smile and work ethic to every job he held. Though he was thrilled to enter retirement after more than 60 years of demanding work, Yvonne encouraged him to pick up a part-time job to support his “manly maintenance” routine and his love for shopping. Karl happily embraced this new chapter, enjoying the chance to connect with others while staying active.
For over 43 years, Karl and Yvonne shared a partnership that was the epitome of love, balance, and mutual respect. As Yvonne’s career flourished, Karl was her unwavering supporter and biggest cheerleader. In return, Yvonne stood by Karl’s side, particularly as his health challenges grew. Her devotion to his care became a beacon of love, embodying the vows they shared. Known for her thoroughness and advocacy, Yvonne often left Karl’s medical teams in awe of her knowledge and preparation, ensuring he always received the best care possible. Together, they made every decision with thoughtfulness and a deep understanding of its impact, navigating challenges hand in hand with grace and courage.
To his Columbus family and friends, Karl—affectionately known as “Ricky”—was a man of quiet strength, wit, and humor. Though shy at times, he was known for his sharp one-liners and infectious laugh. He had a passion for music, a love for tennis and weightlifting (despite his self-proclaimed lack of coordination), and an undeniable sense of style. Whether sipping his coffee with an extra dose of sweet creamer, watching sports from his favorite chair, or spending cherished time with loved ones, Karl’s presence brought comfort and joy to everyone around him.
Karl’s legacy of love, laughter, and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a proud father, a supportive brother, and a loyal friend. His memory will inspire his family and friends to live with the same kindness, strength, and unwavering dedication that he exemplified throughout his life.
Karl “Ricky” Hairston Jr. is survived by his beloved wife, Yvonne Reid-Hairston; his daughters, Jessica Hairston, and Jennifer Hairston; his sisters, Sharon Stevens, Vicky (Randy) Sinkler, and Dolores Hairston; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
May he rest in eternal peace, watching over his family as they continue to honor his legacy and make him proud every day.
