Katherine (Kate) Gottwig
10/31/51-7/8/21
Katherine was born and raised in her beloved Coronado to her late parents Jack and Olive Gottwig. She graduated from Coronado High School In 1969 where she loved sports, especially softball. She later graduated from Fresno State University. Kate eventually followed her mother’s career path earning her teaching credential from San Diego State where she was awarded “Rookie of the Year.”
Kate had a passion for children and teaching. Her love for her students was evident by the many who kept in touch. She received invitations to college graduations, weddings and other milestones of life from former students over the years. Kate’s teaching career took place primarily at San Diego Zamorano Elementary School where she is remembered fondly.
Kate enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling and reading. She volunteered at Coronado Library’s Second Hand Prose after retirement.
She remained close to lifelong friends and their families here in Coronado, celebrating birthdays, holidays and, of course, her favorite - Halloween. Kate will be remembered for her quick wit and her love of children and animals. She will be missed by her many friends and neighbors.
Katherine lost her battle with Alzheimer’s after spending the last 2 years at Fredericka Manor, Chula Vista in the memory care unit.
A celebration of her life will be held at a future date. For those wishing to remember Kate, please consider donations in her memory to (Alzheimer’s charity) or to your favorite charity.
