Keir D Kimbrough's Obituary
Keir D. Kimbrough was born to William M. Kimbrough and Gwendolyn G. (Evans) Kimbrough on December 8, 1968, in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. As a child, Keir loved riding his bike all around town but always knew to come home before the streetlights came on. One day, Keir was out riding his bike when his mother received a phone call from the local police station. They were informing her that her son had become lost while riding his bike and was unable to find his way home. Even as a young, adventurous kid, he was smart enough to know when and how to ask for help. Keir attended Ambridge High School where he played baseball and football. He graduated in 1987 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy. After boot camp, he was stationed in San Diego and went on to dedicate eight years of faithful service to our country.
In 1988, Keir met the love of his life, Cynthia Maria Fowler and on August 19, 1989, they married. During their 33 wonderful years of marriage, they raised two children, Severin “Creemy” R. Gates and Khari D. Kimbrough, in which Keir took great pride. In May of 2014, Keir and Cynthia welcomed their first grandchild, Jordan Mason Gates. Keir loved being a grandfather and he affectionally gave Jordan the nickname “7-11” because he weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces at birth. In turn, “7-11” affectionally referred to Keir as “Pootoo”. The two shared an amazing relationship and a very special bond.
Keir was a great, honorable man. He was a loving son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, educator, coach, friend and was well-respected and loved by all who met him. He always brought his family together with his huge heart, unconditional love, jokes, and advice. His favorite past times were fishing, cooking, riding his E-bike, walking his dog and loyal companion, Nova Rose; and working out at the gym. Keir was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan (black and yellow) who had the uncanny ability to convert others into Steelers fans as well (and those of you know who you are)!
Keir or “Coach Kimbrough” as he was called, coached football for 30 years. He coached the Balboa Raiders Youth Football, San Diego High School, Tecos Football in Tijuana and most recently Point Loma Youth Football.
In Keir’s professional career, he spent over 20 years working with San Diego Unified School District, the Education Center, Gompers Middle School, and San Diego High School. Keir worked for the University of California San Diego as a PACE Continuing Medical Education Coordinator. A job he truly enjoyed and excelled in.
Keir was an inspiration and touched many lives both young and old. He was a thoughtful, caring, and giving man with a sense of humor that was unmatched. He was also known for giving nicknames that well-suited those whom he met. It is evident that he will be forever missed; yet never forgotten, due to the influence he made on his family, friends, and the community.
Keir was predeceased by his father, William Kimbrough and leaves to cherish his memory his beautiful wife, Cynthia; his sons, Creemy and Khari; his grandson, Jordan “7-11” Gates; his mother, Gwen “Ma Dukes”; his sisters and their husbands, Kimberly Thomas (Joseph), Alisha Florence (Willie), and Lois Kimbrough; his brothers and their wives Mark Kimbrough (Sherrie), Curtis Brazil (Nicole), and Jeffery Delai (Toya); and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
