Laura Maria Gray's Obituary
Laura Maria Gray, passed away on May 8th 2025 at the age of 66. She is survived by two brothers Tony Gray of Santa Cruz, California and Philip Gray of Amarillo, Texas; a sister Bridgid Mathurin of San Francisco, California; as well as beloved nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.
Born at Fort Gordon Military Base in Augusta, Georgia in 1958, she was daughter to parents Ray Beverly Gray (USN) (Decd. 1970) and Sadie Frances Gray (Decd. 2016). She attended school and received her First Holy Communion at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. In 1966, her family moved to San Diego, California, where her father was stationed at North Island Amphibious Base in Coronado.
In San Diego she attended St. Rita’s School where she received the sacrament of Holy Confirmation (class of ’72); was a graduate of University of San Diego High School (class of ‘75) where she ran track and was a member of the CYO; and the University of California, San Diego, Muir College (class of ‘80).
She worked for Honeywell Security where she received awards for her sale territory from San Diego County up to Los Angeles. Her next career path was as an Executive Recruiter in the environmental science domain and when that company dissolved she branched off with colleagues to start their own company. When her business partners decided to go back to the corporate world, in an entrepreneurial spirit she started her own business, was diligent, and excelled in the industry.
A creative soul, she enjoyed art and music, ballet, theatre, especially the Old Globe. She had an eclectic taste in music enjoying classical music, jazz, the Jackson 5, James Brown, Al Green as well as David Bowie and Sting and show tunes.
She often reminisced about her early years in Augusta, Georgia with her beloved Grandparents Edgar Louis and Sadie Crump Matthews. She loved to travel and had always wanted to travel more. She loved to laugh and enjoyed a big southern meal topped off with banana pudding, a chocolate layer cake for birthdays, and fresh hand-churned custard ice cream.
A fiercely private person, she loved animals and nature. She tended devotedly to her plumeria and rose plants, loved the beach, and never wanted to be far from the ocean. She lived in Del Mar for over 40 years.
She was devoted to the Blessed Mother and prayed the Rosary.
In accordance with the family’s wishes, a private memorial will be held.
Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.
