Leon G. Touchstone's Obituary
Leon George Touchstone passed peacefully on November 25, 2015, at the age of 92 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. Leon was born in Laurel, Mississippi to Leon G. Touchstone, Sr. and Lillie Virginia Purvis Touchstone. The family moved from Mississippi to San Diego in 1929.Leon is predeceased by his parents and by all of his siblings, including Dollie Fenton, Johnie Axsom, Barney Touchstone and Hilda Willardson, as well as his first wife, Helen Wigginton Touchstone.He retired from Solar after 30 years as a mechanical engineer. He was well known in the San Diego music community as an extraordinary violinist and fiddler. While serving as a radioman with the Army Air Force during WWII, he spent his off hours entertaining the troops live and over the radio with his fiddle. During the late 1940s and into the 1950s his country swing band, Country Cousins, played often at Poway’s Big Stone Lodge, the Bostonia Ballroom and the Jacumba Inn as well as many other venues throughout the County. In his later years he was a member of the San Diego Banjo Band and the San Diego Old Time Fiddlers.Leon is survived by his wife, Dorothy Hogg Touchstone, children Virginia Newton, Daniel (Vicki) Touchstone, Shirley Noyer, 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He also left many adored and adoring nieces, nephews, step-children and step-grandchildren.Services at Greenwood Mortuary Thursday, December 3, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation hours Wednesday, December 2, from 6-9 p.m.
