Louise Hom's Obituary
Louise Hom was born in a village in the Toishan district of Guangdong, China, May 20, 1935. She immigrated to Hong Kong in 1954, and was joined later by her mother Kam, and niece Laura. In 1962 she married Baldwin Hom and moved to San Diego. They raised three children, Kelvin, Philbert, and Melinda. She cared for her family, cooked and cleaned, attended ESL classes and learned to drive. She made many sacrifices for her family. In her garden she grew an impressive assortment of snow peas, bitter melon, tomatoes, winter melon and various fruit trees like loquat, tangerine, fig, peach, plum and guava. She enjoyed staying in touch with her cousins by phone, playing Mahjong with her husband and friends, and watching Chinese soap operas. During the summer visits with her mother, whether in Oakland or in San Diego, mother and daughter would make Chinese Zhongzi (aka Chinese “tamale”) for the family and friends. They spent hours together preparing and making this delicious sweet rice savory dumpling.
In Nov 1999, her first grandchild, Jonathan, was born and she and her husband loved spending time with him. In 2001, her husband of 38 years passed. She missed him very much. In Oct 2004 she had a brain aneurysm but by God’s grace she survived the surgery and about two months later, she prayed to receive Jesus Christ into her life and became a Christian. Several of her long-time friends from the Chinese Community Church that she attended, explained the gospel to her over a period of weeks. A few months later in May 20, 2005 she was baptized. During this time, more grandchildren were born…Serena, Griffin, Melody, Olivia, Samantha and Andrew.
After her aneurysm, she needed 24-hour care provided by caregivers, and her son Phil. Phil was at the house most days to ensure the necessary food and supplies were present and to check the house. For the first five years her memory was good, but after that it slowly declined over the years.
On November 19, she was rushed to the hospital because of breathing difficulty. No visitors were allowed because the hospital was locked down due to Covid, so her children were not able to see her. After 18 days she was released and returned home on December 7th. Each of her children visited her to tell her that they loved her. On Thursday Dec 10th she passed into Eternity to be with Jesus her Lord and Savior. We are grateful for the 16 additional years we had with our mom and will miss her dearly.
A private service is scheduled for Tuesday, December 29th for our mother Louise Hom. Due COVID-19 health concerns and restrictions, the viewing and committal is for immediate family only. We will plan a memorial dinner in the future once the pandemic is under control. Thank you for your love, support, and understanding.
